Crochet Puff Stitch Beanie, Winter Blossom Hat

Puff stitch beanie crochet pattern with a gorgeous texture

crochet puff stitch beanie

I made this crochet puff stitch beanie with a modified version of the Jasmine Stitch. This version has more drape and is not cardboard-like, unlike the real Jasmine stitch.

Seeing the amazing response I got when I posted this hat on FB and Instagram, I can already sense that this design will be much loved by all of you. Thank you so much to Tina for suggesting a beautiful name for this gorgeous hat.

I use Lion Brand Wool-Ease for most of these hats. I love the drape and the stitch definition of the yarn. The peach hat was the only one made using Caron Simply Soft.

You can make a regular beanie or a slouchy hat using this pattern. The pattern comes in 4 sizes, Baby, Toddler, Kids, and Adult. I hope you enjoy the pattern.

Materials

  1.  Worsted weight yarn ( size 4 medium) for the hat. Lion Brand Wool-Ease was used for the gauge. The colors used were Fisherman, Avocado, and Seaspray. The peach hat was made using Caron Simply Soft in color Strawberry.
  2. Hook J (6 mm) for the body of the hat and hook I (5.5mm) for the hatband. Use any size hook to attain the gauge.
  3. One fur pom pom. I used a 3 ½ inch one for the child and adult sizes. Baby size might need a 3-inch pom pom.
  4. Yarn needle to weave in the tails.

Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern is in standard American terms.

sc- single crochet

hdc- half double crochet

dc– double crochet

sl st– slip stitch

ch– chain

sk– skip

st– stitch

YO– Yarn over

Fsc– foundation single crochet

Stitch Explanation

  1. Foundation Single Crochet (Fsc)-optional: Helps in working your foundation chain and sc at the same time to create a stretchy band. You can see a video here: http://bit.ly/2i8pFGW. An easy alternative to Fsc has also been given in the pattern.

  2. Puff Stitch: [YO, insert hook into the st or space indicated and pull up a tall loop about the height of a dc st] repeat a total of 3 times, YO and pull through all the 7 loops on hook, ch 1 to close the puff st.

  3. Puff Stitch Flower ( Referred to as a “flower” in the pattern for the sake of simplicity): [Puff st, ch 2, Puff st, ch 2, Puff st] all worked into the same st.

  4. Sc2tog: [Insert hook into the next st and pull up a loop] 2 times, YO and pull through all the 3 loops on hook.

  5. Hdc2tog: [YO, insert hook into the next st and pull up a loop]2 times, YO and pull through all the 5 loops on hook.

Gauge

""

1. Measure between repeats for gauge

3 Puff stitch flower repeats= 7 inches ( measure from the beginning of a flower to the beginning of the 4th flower as shown by the red line in pic 1 above).

3 puff st rows = 2 inches tall

Pattern for Gauge Swatch

Row 1: Using J(6mm) hook, loosely ch 42. 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn.——-41 sc

Note: To learn how to work a Puff st flower see stitch explanation above. The sc for working your flowers will seem very far away from your hook, but the bulky flower once worked will fill the space perfectly. You should take special care not to miss any chains either within your Puff st flowers or on either side of it. That is what provides drape to your fabric.

Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as ch 1, *( ch 1, sk 3 sts, flower in next st, ch 1, sk 3 sts, 1 sc in next st), repeat from * till the end, turn.———5 flowers

Row 3: Pull up the loop that is already on your hook to the height of a dc, [1 puff st, ch 2, 1 puff st] all into the same st, ch 1, 1sc on top of the middle puff of the next flower, *(ch 1, 1 flower in next sc, ch 1, 1sc on top of middle puff of next flower), repeat from * and after you work a sc on top of the last flower, ch 1, [1 puff, ch 2, 1 puff] all into the last st, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, ch 1, 1 flower in next sc, *( ch 1, 1 sc on top of middle puff of next flower, ch 1, 1 flower in next sc), repeat from * and after you work a flower into the last sc, ch 1, 1 sc on top of last puff st, turn.

Row 5: Repeat Row 3.

Now you can measure for gauge.

Pattern Notes

1. Stitch counts for bigger sizes are given in the order Baby(Toddler, Child, Preteen to Adult).

2. The hat is worked without turning at the end of the rounds.

3. The body of the hat is first worked bottom-up and the hatband is added to the base of the hat with a smaller hook. Due to the nature of the stitch used, working the band first and working the hat onto it left unsightly holes in the band.

4. If you find Fpsc difficult, work option 2 below.

5. To learn how to work a Puff st flower ( just called “flower” in the pattern), see stitch explanation above.

6. The sc for working your flowers will seem very far away from your hook, but the bulky flower once worked will fill the space perfectly.

7. You should take special care not to miss any chains either within your Puff st flowers or on either side of it. That is what provides drape to your fabric and gives stretch to your hat.

Round 1: Fsc 48(56, 64, 72) sl st to the first sc without twisting it. You will notice a small gap at the level of the chain. This can be closed while weaving in the tails. ————48(56, 64, 72)

Find back bumps behind the foundation chain

2. Work into back bumps of the foundation chain

Round 1 (option 2, without Fsc): Ch 48(56, 64, 72) sl st to first ch, ch 1, 1 sc in back bump of next ch (see pic 2 above), 1 sc in back bump of each ch across, 1 sc in same ch as beginning ch-1, sl st to first sc.——-48(56, 64, 72) sc

Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in same st, ch 1, sk 3 sts, flower in next st, *(ch 1, sk 3 sts, 1 sc in next, ch 1, sk 3 sts, flower in next st), repeat from * until 3 sts left, ch 1, sk last 3 sts, sl st to the top of first sc.———-6 (7, 8, 9) flowers

Round 3: Pull up the loop that is already on your hook to the height of a dc, flower in the same st, ch 1, 1 sc on top of the middle puff of next flower, *(ch1, flower in next sc, ch 1, 1 sc on top of middle puff of next flower), repeat from * and after you work a sc on top of the middle puff of the last flower, ch 1, sl st to the top of the first puff st.—————6 (7, 8, 9) flowers

Round 4: Sl st into the next 3 chains, 1 sc on top of middle puff st, ch 1, flower in next sc, *(ch 1, 1 sc on top of middle puff of next flower, ch 1, flower in next sc), repeat from * until you work a flower in the last sc, ch 1, sl st to the first sc.—————6 (7, 8, 9) flowers

The body of the hat will now be 15-15 ½ (17 1/2-18, 19 1/2, 21)inches wide. It will stretch up to 2 inches.

If you are making a beanie, repeat Rounds 3 and 4 until your hat is 4 (4 ½, 5, 5 )inches tall. If you are making a beanie in the size Adult Large, work until your hat is 5 ½ inches tall. It doesn’t matter if you end with Round 3 or 4.

If you are making a slouch, repeat Rounds 3 and 4 until your hat is 5 (5 1/2, 6 1/2, 6 1/2) inches tall. If you are making a slouch in the size Adult Large, work until your hat is 7 inches tall. It doesn’t matter if you end with Round 3 or 4.

Proceed to work the Next Round below. I got 7 rounds of puff st flowers in 4 inches, 8 rounds in 4 1/2 inches, 9 rounds in 5 inches, 10 rounds in 5 1/2 inches, and 11 rounds in 6 inches, and 12 Rounds in 6 1/2 inches.

Shaping the Crown of the Hat (For All Sizes)

Note: The crown is shaped by first reducing a puff st in the flower and then by progressively eliminating the chains in the rounds.

Decrease Rounds (If you ended with Round 3)

Decrease Round 1: Sl st into the next 3 chains, 1 sc on top of middle puff st, ch 1, [puff st, ch 2, puff st] in next sc, *(ch 1, 1 sc on top of the middle puff of next flower, ch1, [puff st, ch 2, puff st] in next sc), repeat from * and after you work a pair of puff sts in the last sc, ch 1, sl st to top of the first sc.————–6 (7, 8, 9) pairs of Puff sts

Note: In the next round, each pair of Puff sts have only 1 ch between them, and the ch 1 before and after the sc is eliminated.

Decrease Round 2: Pull up the loop that is already on your hook to the height of a dc, [puff st, ch 1, puff st] all in the same st, 1 sc in ch-2 space between next 2 puff sts, *( [puff st, ch 1, puff st] in next sc, 1 sc in ch-2 space between next 2 puff sts), repeat from * until you work sc in ch-2 space between the last 2 puff sts, sl st to top of first puff st.————–6 (7, 8, 9) pairs of Puff sts

Note: In the next Round, the ch 1 between 2 puff sts in a pair is also eliminated.

Decrease Round 3: Sl st to the ch-1 space between 2 puff sts, 1 sc in the same ch-1 space, 2 puff sts in next sc, *(1 sc in ch-1 space between next 2 puff sts, 2 puff sts in next sc), repeat from * and after you work a pair of puff sts in the last sc, directly sl st to the first sc.———–6 (7, 8, 9) pairs of Puff sts

Decrease Round 4 (Only for sizes Baby (Toddler): Pull up the loop that is already on your hook to the height of a dc, 1 puff st in the same sc, 1 puff in the gap between next 2 puff sts, *(1 puff in the next sc, 1 puff in the gap between next 2 puff sts), repeat from * till end, sl st to the top of the first puff st.——12 (14) puff sts

Decrease Round 4 (Only for sizes Child (Adult): Every alternate Puff st in this round will not be closed with a ch 1. This will help gather your hat quickly. Pull up the loop that is already on your hook to the height of a dc, 1 puff st in the same sc, 1 puff in the gap between the next 2 puff sts, but after you pull through the 7 loops to make your puff, do not work the ch 1 to close, *(1 puff st in the next sc, 1 puff st in the gap between next 2 puff sts without the closing ch-1), repeat from * till end, sl st to top of first puff st.——–16 (18) puff sts

Round 5 to End (All sizes): Working in a spiral without joining at the end of rounds, ch 1 and keep working sc2tog in next two sts until a very tiny hole the size of a finger is left, sl st to the next st, fasten off with an 18-inch tail. Sew the opening shut and leave the rest of the tail for sewing the pom pom later.

Decrease Rounds (If you ended with Round 4)

Decrease Round 1: Pull up the loop that is already on your hook to the height of a dc, [puff st, ch 2, puff st] all in the same st, ch 1, 1 sc on top of the middle puff of the next flower, *(ch1, [puff st, ch 2, puff st] in next sc, ch 1, 1 sc on top of the middle puff of next flower), repeat from * and after you work 1 sc on top of the middle puff of the last flower, ch 1, sl st to the top of the first puff st.————–6 (7, 8, 9) pairs of Puff sts

Hatband

Notes

1. Gauge for Hat Band: Using I(5.5mm) hook, 13 hdc sts= 4 inches

2. The hatband is worked on to the base of the hat with the smaller hook I(5.5mm). Before you start working the hatband, use the beginning yarn tail to close the small gap in the foundation chain (needed only if you started with a Fsc). Weave in the rest of the tail. The pattern is written to eliminate the seam on your band as far as possible, pay close attention to the beginning and end of Round 1.

Baby (Continued below)

Round 1: Sl st close to the point where you had the beginning tail, ch 1, 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, 1 hdc in next 5 st, *(1 hdc in next 5 st, 2 hdc in next), repeat from * a total of 7 times until no sts are left, 1 hdc in same st as beginning ch 1, do not sl st and do not turn. —————-56 hdc

Toddler (Continued below)

Round 1: Sl st close to the point where you had the beginning tail, ch 1, 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, 1 hdc in next 13 sts, *(1 hdc in next 13 sts, 2 hdc in next), repeat from * a total of 3 times until no sts are left, 1 hdc in same st as beginning ch 1, do not sl st and do not turn. —————-60 hdc

Child Size (Continued below)

Round 1: Sl st close to the point where you had the beginning tail, ch 1, 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, 1 hdc in next 29 st, hdc2tog across next 2 sts, I hdc in next 32 sts, 1 hdc in same st as beginning ch 1, do not sl st and do not turn. —————-64 hdc

Pre-teen /Adult (Continued below)

Round 1: Sl st close to the point where you had the beginning tail, ch 1, 1 hdc in same st as ch 1, hdc2tog across next 2 sts, 1 hdc in next 21 sts, hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next 22 sts, hdc2tog, 1 hdc in next 22 sts, 1 hdc in same st as beginning ch 1, do not sl st and do not turn.. —————-70 hdc

Continue for All the Sizes

3. Shows the third loop behind hdc

Note: The third loop of the hdc is a horizontal bar found behind the stitch(see pic 3 above). Working into this bar will push the “V” of your stitch to the front to create that knit look for your hatband. See pic on left to find out which loop to work into.

Round 2: 1 hdc in the third loop of next hdc, mark this st, 1 hdc in 3rd loop of each st across until you end in the st right before the marked st, do not sl st and do not turn.

Round 3: 1 hdc in third loop of marked st, move the marker up into the st you just made, 1 hdc in 3rd loop of each st across until you end in the st right before the marked st, do not sl st and do not turn.

Note: For sizes Child and Preteen to Adult, repeat Round 3 once more before proceeding to Round 4 below. If you want your band wider, you will repeat Round 3.

Round 4: 1 sc in third loop of marked st, move the marker up into the st you just made, 1 sc in 3rd loop of each st across until you end in the st right before the marked st, sl st to the third loop of marked st, sl st to next sc, fasten off.

Finishing the Puff Stitch Crochet Hat

Weave in any tails left at the base of the hat. Use the tail left at the crown to sew on the furry pom pom.
