About this pattern

After the success of my ‘Tulips from Holland‘ square, I decided to turn this popular stitch pattern into a cardigantriangle shawlcrop topshrug, poncho, sweater, bag, bag with handles, and now a dress!

This granny square features chains, double crochet and puff stitches. It’s called the Tulip Square as the stitch resemble tulips, which is a symbol of my country: the Netherlands.

My pattern is available in size XS-5XL and a video tutorial can be found below.

About the yarn

For this granny square dress I’ve used Lionbrand Coboo which contains 50% cotton and 50% Bamboo. It feels very soft and has excellent drape and stitch definition. It’s one of my favorite yarns and I often use it for shawls and garments.

Sizes & Measurements

  • For reference, model is 1.63m / 5’4″ tall with a 34” bust and wearing the dress in size S.
  • If you’re in between sizes, size down.
  • You can use a smaller hook to create slightly smaller squares resulting in a smaller dress.
  • If you want to change the length, add or remove squares at the bottom.
  • Another tip for making the dress longer, is by adding a border at the bottom.
  • Optionally you can wear a belt to give your dress a little more structure and upgrade your look.

Assembly

Arrange all squares and triangles as indicated by diagrams below with the good sides facing upwards. Slip stitch everything together. Use a loose tension.

Slip stitch tip: insert your hook in the front loop of the square on top, and in the back loop of the square below.

Assembly

Fold dress in half and slip stitch all remaining squares and triangles on the side together.

Shoulders

Use a tapestry needle to sew both front straps to the back panel.

Neckline

Decide how deep you want your v-neckline to be. Use a tapestry needle to seam up a few stitches to make your v-neckline less low.

Round 1:
attach yarn to right shoulder and work a round of single crochet around entire neckline. Stitch count is not important here, just try to keep a consistent tension. Make sure to end with a multiple of 3 stitches.

Round 2:
*1 puff in next st, skip next 2 st* repeat around, sl st in 1st puff. Fasten off, weave ends.

Tip: mini puff stitches look nice as well: pull up 5 loops instead of 7.

Armhole

Use a tapestry needle to seam up a few stitches, leaving 8 (8, 9, 9, 10) (10, 10, 11, 11)” / 20 (20, 23, 23, 26) (26, 26, 28, 28) cm open for the armhole. Repeat on the other side.

Round 1:
attach yarn to arm pit and work a round of sc around entire armhole. End with an even number.

Round 2:
*1 puff in next st, skip next st* repeat around, sl st in 1st puff. Fasten off. Repeat on the other side.

Tip: use mini puff stitches by pulling up 5 loops instead of 7.

Sc along bottom

Attach yarn at the bottom and work 1 round of single crochet evenly around. Stitch count is not important, try to keep a consistent tension. Fasten off, weave all ends.

Blocking

You can (steam) block the dress to help smooth the joined granny squares.

End of pattern.
