The Snowcap Cardigan

It’s a brand new year so that means it’s time for a brand new crochet pattern! The Snowcap Cardigan is my very first design of 2021 being released even though i’ve had it in my brain for at least 6 months and sitting in my blog drafts for a couple of months! I’m so excited for this one and I hope you guys love it.

I like to think of The Snowcap Cardigan as the sister sweater to The Coffeeshop Cardigan. Both of them use homespun yarn but have a completely different look to them. I used the Thick & Quick version of Homespun for The Snowcap Cardigan instead of regular homespun. The Snowcap Cardigan is also boxier, oversized and cropped compared to the slimmer and longer Coffeeshop Cardigan! You can grab all the supplies you need from my friends at JOANN!

Are you scared of Homespun yarn?? Never fear!! I have a whole video tutorial walking you through this pattern. The Thick & Quick version is even easier to use than the normal version in my opinion. I use a larger crochet hook in this pattern which helps while working with this yarn. Not only that but I use easy stitches throughout and minimal shaping! Hot tip- FEEL your stitches instead of trying to see them!!

Pattern Notes:

  • This sweater is made in separate panels and seamed together. The back and front panels are worked from the bottom up.

  • You will join your sleeves and work top down.

  • This yarn can be difficult to see your stitches. I recommend feeling your stitches instead of trying to see.

  • You can add length to your cardigan by adding more rows on the back and front panels. Take into account the extra yardage you will need.

Abbreviations (US Terms):

The Snowcap Cardigan

Pattern:

Back Panel-

Ch 39(41, 43, 45, 47, 49, 51, 53, 55)

Row 1 (RS): 1 Hdc in the second Ch from hook and each Ch across, turn. (38(40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54) Hdc)

Rows 2-23(24, 24, 25, 25, 26, 26, 27, 27): Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Tie off.

Front Panel (make 2)-

Ch 17(18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25)

Row 1 (RS): 1 Hdc in the second Ch from hook and each Ch across, turn. (16(17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24) Hdc)

Rows 2-23(24, 24, 25, 25, 26, 26, 27, 27): Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Tie off, leaving long tails to sew the front panels to the back panel.

Seaming-

Place your back panel in front of you, right side up. Take one of your front panels and place it on top of your back panel right side down. Place it so the edge stitches are lined up evenly with both panels. Seam all stitches in the last row of the front panel to the matching stitch of the back panel. Repeat with other front panel on the other side. You will have 6 unworked stitches in the center of your back panel.

Sleeves-

You will now be joining your yarn to the sides of the front/back panel and crocheting in rows to create the sleeves. Lay your cardigan out in front of you, wrong side up. Using your measuring tape, measure from the shoulder seam (where the front and back panel meet) down the front panel a total of 7.5(8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5)” and place a SM.

Repeat the process by measuring from the shoulder seam down the back panel for another 7.5(8, 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5)”. Place a SM. You should have a 15(16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23)” space in between the 2 SM’s.

Row 1: With your work still facing wrong side up, join yarn with a Sl St in the same spot as the SM, Ch 1 (does not count), work 22(24, 26, 28, 30, 30, 32, 34, 34) Hdc across until you reach the next SM, turn. (22(24, 26, 28, 30, 30, 32, 34, 34) Hdc) Note: Since you are working into the sides of the rows of the front and back panel for Row 1 there is not a specific “stitch” that you will be working into. Just try to evenly spread your stitches across the length. Make sure your shoulder seam is directly in the middle of your stitch count with half the stitches on either side.

Rows 2-6: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, Hdc2tog, 1 Hdc in each St across until 2 Sts remain, Hdc2tog, turn. (20(22, 24, 26, 28, 28, 30, 32, 32) Hdc)

Rows 8-9: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Row 10: Repeat Row 7. (18(20, 22, 24, 26, 26, 28, 30, 30) Hdc)

Rows 11-12: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Row 13: Repeat Row 7. (16(18, 20, 22, 24, 24, 26, 28, 28) Hdc)

Rows 14-15: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

XS(S, M) ONLY-

Rows 16-17: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Tie off, leave a tail long enough to sew up sleeve and sew down side of cardigan.

L(XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) ONLY-

Row 16: Repeat Row 7. (20(22, 22, 24, 26, 26) Hdc)

Row 17: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Row 18: Repeat Row 7. (18(20, 20, 22, 24, 24) Hdc)

Sizes L(XL,2X) Tie off, leave a tail long enough to sew up sleeve and sew down side of cardigan. Sizes 3X(4X,5X) Continue to next row.

3X(4X, 5X) ONLY-

Row 19: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across.

Tie off, leave a tail long enough to sew up sleeve and sew down side of cardigan.

All Sizes- Repeat “Sleeves” section on opposite side.

Seaming-

Lay your cardigan so that the RS are facing each other. Your front panels will be on top of your back panel and your sleeves folded from cuff to underarm. Using the long tail of yarn that you left at the cuff, sew or Sl St up the arm. When you reach the underarm continue joining down the side of the cardigan. Tie off when you reach Row 1 of the back and front panels. Repeat on opposite side.

Trim-

With your cardigan RS out, join yarn with a Sl St to left front panel at the inner corner. Stitch count is not crucial here.

Row 1: Ch 1, work Hdc stitches evenly up the side of the front panel, along the back neckline, and back down the second front panel. When you reach the corner, tie off.

Pockets (make 2)-

Ch 13

Row 1: 1 Hdc in the second Ch from the hook and each Ch across, turn. (12 Hdc)

Rows 2-3: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St across, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, 1 Hdc in each St until 2 Sts remain, Hdc2tog, turn. (11 Hdc)

Row 5: Ch 1, Hdc2tog, 1 Hdc in each remaining St across, turn. (10 Hdc)

Row 6: Repeat Row 4. (9 Hdc)

Row 7: Repeat Row 5. (8 Hdc)

Row 8: Repeat Row 4. (7 Hdc)

Row 9: Repeat Row 5. (6 Hdc)

Tie off, leave a long tail for sewing pockets to cardigan.

With your cardigan correct side out lay our first pocket onto the top of one of the front panels. Line up the outer edges, the corner, and the bottom edge of the pocket and front panel. Using the tail of yarn sew the pocket to the cardigan leaving the edges of the decrease rows un-worked for our pocket opening. Repeat on other side.

Weave in all ends.

Love your cardigan Rachel! It’s so cozy! I will love to make winter projects that I can get ready to hike. Happy crocheting Rachel!

I have a stash of Homespun…do you double it to make the quick version, I wonder?

Thank you for your easy pattern and tutorial explanation. I can never do patterns and I’ve been crocheting since I was nine. I am a left hander and back in the day that was a no-no. It was also the reason for my determination to learn. I have been a visual learner ever since. I am excited to be able to make this cardigan. I have seven daughters who will be excited to wear something I made. I follow you on Instagram and really love your talent. Your mom must be proud! My page is Pillowpals and Things. Take care and be safe. ❤
