The Piper Blanket – A Modern Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Modern Crochet Baby Blanket Design Inspiration

I’ve been working on a secret project this year (shhh, it’ll be here soon!) and one of the things that I utilized in this secret project was a simple cable. I have to admit that I never really paid much attention to crochet cables. There’s no specific reason why, I just hadn’t yet.

However, I loved the simple cable in my secret project so much that I knew I just had to use it again and I had to use it right now.

Ideas quickly started flowing and I waded through several different design ideas before I finally landed on the design for the Piper Blanket.

I wanted the blanket to be modern and fairly easy but not so easy that it was boring. I wanted it to grow like a child grows, have a sweet nature and, of course, have a little striping action because I love stripes!

Thus, this lovely modern crochet baby blanket pattern came to be. With a mitered square construction, the blanket has lovely V shaped striping.

With simple cables that grow in number as we add rows, we create a radiating lines in an inverse V shape that cut through the stripes but feel organic and cozy.

How to Customize this Modern Baby Blanket

Although I did crochet the sample for this modern crochet baby blanket pattern in white and a dusty pink color, this is by no means just a baby blanket for girls.

You absolutely can change the colors to any that you’d like to make this modern crochet baby blanket perfect for any babe.

While I absolutely love the striping, you don’t have to include it. You could certainly crochet this blanket in one color or in many colors if you prefer to. You can even change the width of the stripes, if you prefer!

Additionally, you can certainly alter the size of this modern crochet baby blanket pattern fairly easily. Because it uses a mitered square construction, which starts in one corner and grows larger with each row, you can simply add or remove rows to make the blanket larger or smaller.

To make this crochet baby blanket smaller, crochet the rows until you reach your desired size. Then, move on to the border.

To make this crochet baby blanket bigger, continue crocheting rows beyond what is listed in the instructions. Follow the established pattern as written but make sure to remember that you will continue to add stitches, so the repeats listed in the instructions will become more over time.

What does “Mitered Square” mean?

A mitered square is a method of crocheting a square that is similar to corner to corner but isn’t exactly the same. With a corner to corner square, you will crochet a triangle until it is the width that you’d prefer and then you will decrease.

With a mitered square, the work will always be a square and therefore you continue adding rows until the work is the size that you’d prefer it to be.

In the case of this modern crochet baby blanket pattern, this works well to create the V cables and the V striping.

A mitered square is very similar to the construction of a triangle shawl worked from the center out. The only difference, really, is that we do NOT increase at the beginning or end of the rows. This shapes the work to be a square instead of a triangle.

Neat, right?

Let’s Talk about Yarn

For this modern crochet baby blanket pattern, I used Lion Brand’s Coboo in colorways White and Mauve. Coboo is a blend of 51% cotton and 49% rayon from bamboo. It’s a lovely blend of yarn that is incredibly soft and, of course, cotton and/or bamboo are always good choices when it comes to baby blankets. Additionally, it is machine washable and dryable, so it’s a great choice.

However…

This yarn has a tendency to split. It didn’t bother me through crocheting, but I think it is a fair warning to give as yarn that splits can be very frustrating for many crocheters.

You can use nearly any DK yarn that you’d like to use for this project. I would recommend a cotton or cotton blend as it’s a great option for babies. One of my other favorite baby yarns is Bernat Softee Baby Cotton which is also a lovely cotton yarn and comes in some great color choices!

SKILL LEVEL

Advanced Beginner/Light Intermediate – This modern crochet baby blanket pattern uses stitches and techniques that most advanced beginner crocheters should be comfortable with. You should know how to chain, single crochet, double crochet and be familiar with front and back post stitches.

Specifically, we use back post double crochets and front post treble crochets. The FPTR’s are crossed in this modern crochet baby blanket pattern to create the cables. As long as you know how to work a front post treble, you should be able to work them crossed!

GAUGE

16  double crochet by 8 rows is approx 4 inches by 4 inches. Gauge is listed after blocking.

Gauge won’t make or break this pattern, especially because you can easily continue crocheting rows or stop crocheting rows when you reach your desired size.

Note: I am a tight crocheter, so my tension is usually tighter than others. Learn more about gauge and what this means here. As long as you’re in the approximate range of gauge, you should be fine.

FINISHED SIZE

Approximately 33 inches x 33 inches. Size is listed after blocking.

If you prefer to change the size, you can! If you prefer a smaller blanket, simply follow the row instructions until you reach your desired size and then skip to the border. If you prefer a larger blanket, continue crocheting more rows than listed following  the established pattern.

NOTES

• This baby blanket is constructed using the mitered square technique. This means that it is worked from one corner outward and grows larger with each row. There is no decreasing.
• Working a mitered square is very similar to working a triangle shawl. The only difference is we only increase in the chain 2 space in the center and we do NOT increase the start or end of the rows.
• Chain 1 and Chain 2 at the beginning of rows do not count as a stitch. Always place your first stitch of the row in the same stitch you chained out of.

Stitch Count Note

The stitch counts are listed at the end of each row in parenthesis and bold italics. You will notice that the stitch count has more than just a number listed.

This is to help with breaking down the stitch count. In later rows, there will be many stitches and it can be tedious to count them. This pattern breaks down the stitch count to help make counting stitches easier.

For example, on Row 43, you will see: “(172 sts – 86 each side)”

This means that for Row 43, you will have 172 stitches total. On each side of the chain 2 space that controls the corner of the blanket, you will have 86 stitches.

Special Stitch – Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc)

In this modern crochet baby blanket pattern, you will work BPDCs or Back Post Double Crochets around the posts of a C-FPTR.

To work a BPDC, you will: Yarn over and insert your hook from back of work to front of work between the posts of the previous and current stitch and maneuver the hook back to the back side of the work on the other side of the post.

Your hook should sit horizontal with the post of the stitch around the back of the hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on hook.  Complete the BPDC the same as a normal DC: Yarn over, pull through 2 loops. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops.

Special Stitch – Front Post Treble Crochet (fptr)

In this pattern, the Front Post Treble Crochet stitch is only referenced when you are instructed to work 1 BPDC into each of the 2 Front Post Treble Crochets from the C-FPTR from the previous row. You will only work a FPTR in a C-FPTR as referenced in the C-FPTR special stitch below. However, it is important to know how to work a FPTR to follow the directions properly.

To work a FPTR, you will:
Yarn over twice and insert your hook from front of work to back of work between the posts of the previous stitch and current stitch and maneuver the hook back to the front of the work on the other side of the post.

Your hook should sit horizontal with the post of the stitch on the front of the hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Complete the FPTR the same as you would a normal treble: Yarn over and pull through 2 loops 3 times.

Special Stitch – Crossed Front Post Treble Crochet (C-FPTR)

The C-FPTR or Crossed Front Post Treble Crochet can seem intimidating, especially in its abbreviation, but it’s a fairly straight forward stitch.

To work a C-FPTR, you will:
Skip 1 stitch and place 1 Front Post Treble Crochet around the post of the next stitch. Then, working in front so all of your work is behind your hook, go back to the skipped stitch and place 1 Front Post Treble Crochet around the post.

The C-FPTR will be worked on both bpdc’s and dc posts.

This technique is very similar to a crossed double crochet, as used in my Something New Baby Blanket. The only difference is that you’re using Front Post Treble Crochets instead of normal double crochets.

Special Stitch – Magic Circle

This modern crochet baby blanket pattern is written to use a magic circle.  You can use the magic circle or you can chain 3 and slip stitch to the first chain made to create a circle to work into. Your choice!

Piper – A Modern Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Beginning with Color A, create a Magic Circle (click for tutorial) or chain 3, sl st to first ch made to form a circle.

Row 1 (RS) – In Magic Circle, ch 2 (doesn’t count here or throughout). Place 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in circle. Pull tail tight. (4 sts – 2 each side)

Row 2 (WS) – Ch 2, turn. 1 dc each of the 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch 2 spc, 1 dc each of the last 2 sts. (8 sts – 4 each side)

Place 2 sc in side of each dc to end of side. Ch 2, rotate to work along final raw edge. Place 2 sc in side of each dc to end. Ch 2, sl st to first sc of round to close. (138 sts on each “raw” edge, 139 on each side of blanket worked on Row 69 – 554 stitches)

Round 2 – Ch 2, turn. In ch 2 spc, place (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc). Place 1 dc in each st to next ch 2 spc. Repeat around for the entire blanket. Sl st to first dc of round to close. (570 sts)

Cut your yarn, weave in your ends. You’re done!

Block the Blanket

Because this modern crochet baby blanket uses the mitered technique, I would recommend blocking it to ensure the square shape.

Pin the blanket onto blocking boards as straight as you can. It may take a bit of stretching to make the square have “perfect” right angles (remember, nothing is “perfect”!).

Once you are satisfied, block the blanket with the best blocking method for the yarn.

I blocked mine on my Knit IQ blocking mats and I used these blocking combs (these are amazing for straight lines!). I also used T pins to pin the points of the square down to really define them.

If you used cotton, spray the blanket with water until damp and leave to dry over night.

If you used acrylic, use a steamer, the steaming function on your iron or spray the blanket with water and heat it with a hair dryer.

If you used a blend of acrylic and cotton, use the steps above for acrylic.

Once the blanket is dry, you can unpin it!
