The Lucy Tote Crochet Pattern

Looking for an easy tote bag pattern? Then The Lucy Tote crochet pattern is perfect for you! This tote bag is worked from the bottom up, in the round. It comes together quickly since you will be using bulky weight tape yarn!

If you haven’t used Lionbrand Rewind yarn yet, then you are in for a treat! It’s sooo soft and creates a sturdy fabric when worked up! There is no snagging because of the flat tape style and it’s super easy to frog if needed! I used under 2 skeins in the Elm color and 1 in Willow! They have several different really pretty color options though if you want to check it out!

I also wanted to point out that the straps can totally be made longer if you want! I put a little note within the pattern on where and how to do this. When designing the bag I was going back and forth with the strap length. When I asked TikTok what I should to the majority of people said to keep the straps the length I had them! But I wanted to make sure those who prefer longer straps would have that option as well!

Another fun detail on the bag is the joining technique I used! Instead of slip stitching from front to back after each round, you remove your hook and slip stitch from back to front! Super easy to do and this greatly reduces the seam on the bag. You don’t have to do it this way but I highly recommend it! If you need a visual on how to do this I show it in my full video tutorial for The Lucy Tote! If you like this technique and want to learn more about it, check out these blog posts! She has lots of great info on how to do it with other stitches as well!

Stitches and Abbreviations (US Terms):

Ch- Chain

Sc- Single Crochet

Sl St- Slip Stitch

Sk- Skip

Special Stitches:

Invisible Sl St- After working the last stitch of the round, remove your hook from the loop on your hook, insert your hook in the first stitch of the round from back to front, take the loop that you just removed and place it back on your hook, pull it through the first St that your hook is in. Tug slightly so the loop disappears. Instead of chaining 1 to start of the next round you will just pull the loop on your hook up slightly to give it some height. Go directly into the first Sc of the round to start.

Changing colors-

To change your colors, complete the Invisible Sl St. Instead of pulling up the final loop slightly with your current color, place your new color on your hook and pull it through the loop on your hook. Tug down the old color tightly until it’s hidden. Pull up your new color slightly to begin the next round.

Pattern:

With Color A-

Ch 29

Round 1: Work 6 Sc in the second Ch from the hook, 1 Sc in each Ch across (the back bump) until you reach the last Ch, 6 Sc in final Ch, (don’t turn, you will now be working the remaining stitches of the round in the bottom of your starting Ch until you reach the first St made), 1 Sc in each remaining St, Invisible Sl St to join, pulling loop on your hook up slightly before starting the next round (see special stitches). (64 Sc)

Round 2: 2 Sc in first 6 Sts, 1 Sc in next 26 Sts, 2 Sc in next 6, 26 Sc, Invisible Sl St to join. (76 Sc)

Round 49: Work 1 Sl St in the next 4 Sts for a total of 5 Sl St (including the join), work 1 Sc in the same spot as the last Sl St made, 1 Sc in the next 30 Sts, Ch 29, Sk the next 19 Sts, 1 Sc in next 31 Sts, Ch 29, Sk 19. (62 Sc, 58 Ch) Note- You can Ch 39 instead of 29 for a longer handle if desired.

Round 50: Work 1 Sc in the first St of the previous round to join, 1 Sc in each St until you reach the first Ch Sp, 29 Sc into the Ch Sp, 1 Sc in each St until you reach the second Ch Sp, 29 Sc into the Ch Sp. (120 Sc) Note- If you did the longer handle option above, work 39 Sc into the Ch Sp instead of 29.

Rounds 51 & 52: 1 Sc in each St around.

Tie off.

Adding Detail:

Using your needle, we will be adding some French knots and weaving detail to the bag. I used Color A, weaving in and out every couple of stitches in between rounds 10 & 11. Repeat the same thing in between rounds 34 & 35. Using Color B, I added French Knots in between rows 18 &19 and 42 & 43. I left 3 stitches in between each French Knot. To make a French Knot, bring your needle from the back of your work to the front, wrap your yarn around the tip of the needle twice and insert it back down, next to (not directly) the same place you came up from. Hold the yarn gently and pull it all the way back through. I recommend watching my video or searching a tutorial if you are not familiar with how to do this.

Tie your yarn in a knot to secure and weave in all ends when finished.

Pocket:

Ch 31

Row 1: 1 Sc in the second Ch from the hook and each Ch across, turn. (30 Sc)

Rows 2-24: Ch 1, 1 Sc in each St across, turn.

Tie off, leave a long tail for sewing pocket to inside of bag.

Sew Pocket:

Turn your bag inside out. Place your pocket on either side of the bag, I put mine on the same side as the seam. Use your needle and sew both sides and bottom of pocket to join. Be sure to not stick your needle through to the other side.

Finish Up:

Use leftover yarn to make a tassel and tie to your bag. Weave in any remaining ends.
