To be honest, when I was young, cowl neck or turtle neck style clothes were my least favorite piece that I would pick out to wear. But now!? These cowl neck ponchos would be my first choice to wear this fall/winter season.

We will crochet linen stitch for the main body part of this poncho pattern front panel, and the back panel uses the same stitch.

For the turtle neck part is made from half double crochet stitch. That’s all you have done!

Any kind of fiber that has 4 medium-weight acrylics yarn, wool, wool blend, or you can use cotton DK weighty yarn hold double when crochet is also fine too.

Supplies & materials.

• I used   4 medium weight yarn acrylic, or cotton dk weight hold double. I use around 1200 yards.
• 6.0  mm crochet hook or J/10 US hook size
• Sewing yarn needle
• stitch marker
• Gauge:  2 moss stitch  = 1 inch

Skill and abbreviations.

• (American crochet terms)
• You will need to know how to make
• St, which means stitch
• sc which means single crochet
• hdc, which means half double crochet
• Blo, which means crochet in the back loop only
• ch, Chain
• slip knot
• moss /linen stitch

Finished Size Approximately:

Small to medium ( Easy to adjust by adding more chain to the foundation chain for bigger size)

For me the model wearing this piece, I am 4’9 feet tall.

How to crochet a cowl neck poncho video tutorial.

Measurement.

of one rectangle.

• 22 inches long
• 17 inches wide

For the width: If you need to make it wider ( bigger size) simply add more chains in an even number multiple of 2.

For the length:  add more rows.

The beginner crochet cowl neck poncho free pattern instruction.

Pick up a crochet hook size 6 mm and Start off by making a slip knot. Then make 54 chains  (foundation chain multiple of 2 )

• For size, largely make 80 chains
• size XL makes 90 chains
• size 2xl make 100 chains
• 3xl make 120 chains.

Row1. sc in the second chain from the hook and each chain across, ch1 turn

Row2. sc in the next stitch from hook * ch1, skip 1 st, sc in next st * repeat * to * across until the end of the row. Ch1 turn

 Row3. sc in the first ch space * ch1, skip 1 st, sc in the next ch space * repeat * to * across until the end of the row and make sc on the turning ch. Ch1 turn

Repeat row 3 until your piece measures approximately 22 inches long; fasten off.

Repeat the same process for the second piece.

Crocheted 4 ribbing bands to attach to the side of the poncho.

Next, we will make the band by crocheting them separate from the body of the poncho 4 pieces.

Pick up your 6 mm crochet hook and start with making a slip knot and 10 chains and crochet row by row the back loop only until you get the length that matches the length of the side of the poncho.

Row1. crochet 1hdc in each of the next 10 chains from hook, ch1 turn (9)

Row2.  crochet 1hdc in each of the next  stitches from hook ( blo only), ch1 turn (9)

Repeat round 2 until you get the length matching the side of the poncho.

Then attach them by sewing using a yarn needle to the side of the rectangles.

Now it’s time to assemble the poncho.

After attaching the ribbing band to the side of each rectangle then, lay them flat on top of each other and sew the shoulder by using a yarn needle and leave the open neck for 8 -9 inches.

Pick up your 6 mm crochet hook and start with making a slip knot and 46 chains and crochet row by row the back loop only until you get the length that matches the length of the open neck.

Row1. crochet 1hdc in each of the next 10 chains from hook, ch1 turn (45)

Row2.  crochet 1hdc in each of the next  stitches from hook ( blo only), ch1 turn (45)

Repeat round 2 until you get the length matching the open neck.

Then attach them by sewing using a yarn needle to the open neck.
