I designed this hat when my son was born. Most of what I made at the time was very girly so I had to make something more suitable for him. Up until now it was a paid pattern but now you can enjoy it here for FREE.

Bear Applique Hat

Materials:

H hook
Worsted weight yarn

Abbreviations:

Ch= chain
Sc= single crochet
Ss= slip stitch
Hdc= half double crochet
Dc= double crochet
Fpdc= front post double crochet
Bpdc= back post double crochet

Gauge:

Approximately 6dcs by 3.6 rows = 2” square

Sizes:

Newborn (fits up 14”), 3-6 months (fits up to 17”), 6-12 months (fits up to 19”), Toddler, (fits up to 20”) Child (fits up to 21”) and Adult (fits up to 24”).

Notes:

Read all instructions before beginning.
This hat is worked in rounds.
The ch1 or ch2 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch.
For the hat always join to the 1st stitch of the round with a slip stitch and work the 1st stitch of the next round in the same stitch you joined into.
I like to start my hats with a magic ring. If you do not know this technique you may also start the hat with 3 chs and working the first round into the 3rd ch from the hook.
After you have finished the hat follow the pattern for the applique bear and sew it on.
Gauge for the bear is not important. I used a H hook but you can go up a hook size or down a hook size to make it slightly larger or smaller.

Instructions:

Newborn:

Start with magic ring, ch 2

OR ch 3 and work first round in 3rd chain from hook.

Rnd 1 – Work 10 dc in ring. Join (10)

Rnd 2 – Ch 2, 2dc in same stitch and each st around. Join (20)

Rnd 3 – Ch 2, *dc, 2dc; repeat from * around. Join (30)

Rnd 4 – Ch 2, *dc 2, 2dc; repeat from * around. Join (40)

Rnd 5 – Ch 2, dc in same st and each st around. Join (40)

Rnd 6-8 – Repeat rnd 5. (40) Rnd 9 – Ch 2, fpdc in same st, bpdc in next, *fpdc in next, bpdc in next; repeat from * around (40). Fasten off and weave in all ends. Proceed to bear pattern.

3-6 months:

Start with magic ring, ch 2

OR ch3 and work first round in 3rd chain from hook.

Rnd 1 – Work 11 dc in ring. Join (11)

Rnd 2 – Ch 2, 2dc in same stitch and each st around. Join (22)

Rnd 3 – Ch 2, *dc, 2dc; repeat from * around. Join (33)

Rnd 4 – Ch 2, *dc 2, 2dc; repeat from * around. Join (44)

Rnd 5 – Ch 2, dc in same st and each st around. Join (44)

Rnd 6-9 – Repeat rnd 5. (44)

Rnd 10 – Ch 2, fpdc in same st, bpdc in next, *fpdc in next, bpdc in next; repeat from * around (44). Fasten off and weave in all ends. Proceed to bear pattern.

6-12 months:

Start with magic ring, ch 2

Toddler:

Start with magic ring, ch 2

Rnd 2 – Ch 2, 2dc in same stitch and each st around. Join (18)

Bear Pattern

Start with magic ring and ch 1

OR ch 2 and work first rnd in 2nd ch from hook.

Rnd 1 – Work 6 sc in ring. Do not join (6)

Rnd 2 – Continue working around. 2sc in each st around. Do not join (12)

Rnd 3 – *Sc in next st, 2sc in next st; repeat from * around. Do not join (18)

Rnd 4 – Sc in next 2 sts, *ss in next 5 sts, (ch 2, 2dc, ch 2, ss) in same st;

Repeat from * one more time. Ss in next 8 sts

Leave a long tail for sewing, Fasten off. Join with an invisible join.

Invisible Join:

Finishing the bear with an invisible join will give it a seamless look. Thread your needle and weave the yarn from front to back under both loops of the closest ss to the right.

Now weave the yarn down through the middle of the last ss made.

Your bear should now look like this.

Face:

If you’d like to add a face to the bear (I think it needs it) it is very simple. Cut a long length of black yarn. I used French knots for the eyes and nose and a couple stitches for the mouth.
