Sunflowers are arguably the happiest flowers around, which makes this one very happy hat! Made using panels of sunflower granny squares, the hat can be shaped quickly into your new favorite slouchy beanie. The finished result is a field of sunflowers that adorns a cute, comfy hat you can wear all season long! The pattern is easy and works up fairly quickly once the squares are assembled, so this is a great pattern to add to your repertoire for the Christmas and holiday season! What a great gift this would make!

Sunflower Slouchy Hat

It feels like my best and favorite crochet projects often revolve around Mermaids, Pumpkins, and Sunflowers! I’m so happy that my Sunflower Granny Square Blanket is a crocheter favorite! Ever since I designed it, I’ve been trying to think of fun ways to incorporate sunflowers into every other part of the house (my Sunflower Placemats are proof of that). I even designed a smaller sunflower granny square, which is a co-star in my Farm Fresh Fall Granny Square Blanket! But why should they be limited to just the house? That’s right, you could be wearing a field of sunflowers everywhere you go! And so this slouchy hat design was born. Not long after, I had the idea to whip up some matching Sunflower Gloves which you can find the pattern for HERE!

I have some favorite yarns to work with when it comes to sunflowers, and I used a few of them when designing this hat! My classic combo is Red Heart Super Saver in Gold and Coffee, and I also became a big fan of Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Mustard and Pound of Love in Antique White for the contrast color during this process. You can find them all on Amazon:

Square Assembly
Squares should be assembled so that 4 squares are on top, and 4 squares are on bottom. (First photo below.) Place two squares together with right sides facing each other (second photo below). Working through BLO of square closest to you, and FLO of square furthest from you, sc in each st across and into first ch of square corners. Rep this process horizontally (third photo) and vertically (fourth photo) to attach all the squares.

When all 8 squares have been assembled, fold piece in half with right sides facing together, and sc across to form a round piece. Ch 2; do not fasten off.

Hat Shaping
Rnd 1 – evenly make 60 dc around. Join with sl st to first dc. Ch 2. (First photo below) (60 dc)
Rnd 2 – dc in next 8 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts (second photo below). Rep around. Join with sl st to first dc. Ch 2 (54 dc)

Rnd 3 – dc in next 7 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts. Rep around. Join with sl st to first dc. Ch 2 (48 dc)
Rnd 4 – dc in next 6 sts, dc2tog over next 2 sts. Rep around. Join with sl st to first dc. (42 dc)

Closing the hat
Fold body of hat together and sc two sides together (first photo below). Fold in the other direction, closing two large gaps left after first side has been closed (second photo). Close the remaining gaps even further by repeating the above two steps. Fasten off.

Cuff
Attach contrast color on bottom of hat, ch 2.
Rnd 1 – evenly make 68 dc around. Join with sl st to first dc. Ch 2 (68 dc)
Rnd 2 – fpdc around next 2 sts (first and second photos below), dc in next 2 sts (third photo below); rep 16 more times. Ch 2 (34 fpdc, 34 dc)
Rows 3 – 6 – rep Row 2. Do not ch 2 at end of Rnd 6. (Fourth photo below shows finished Cuff.)
Fasten off, weave in all ends.
