Sunflower Coaster Crochet Pattern

Bring the sunshine in with this quick and easy sunflower coaster crochet pattern. These sunflower coasters are a fun way to add a pop of colour and personality to your home.

I’ve always loved sunflowers. They’re definitely a statement flower perfect for brightening up a space and now you can enjoy them all year round.

How to Crochet a Sunflower Coaster

This sunflower coaster crochet pattern is worked in joined rounds.

The centre is made up of half double crochet before we add some fun texture with a round of popcorn stitches and then the petals.

Are Crochet Coasters Effective?

Yes! Crochet coasters are just as effective as cork, ceramic or stone coasters and are much more fun as they can be easily personalised to suit your space.

What is the Best Yarn to Use for Crochet Coasters?

Cotton yarn is a popular choice for crochet coasters as it’s durable, absorbent, holds up well to heat and is easy to wash.

Why You’ll Love This Sunflower Coaster Crochet Pattern

  • Giftable: From housewarmings to birthdays, crochet coasters make a thoughtful gift.
  • Quick & easy: Perfect for those with time constraints who are looking for a quick crochet fix.
  • Crochet cruise control: Doesn’t require much focus.

Materials

  • DK weight cotton yarn in dark brown and yellow (I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Coffee Bean and Buttercup Yellow)
  • 3mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle, scissors

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • hdc-inc – half double crochet increase
  • sc – single crochet
  • pc – popcorn stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sk – skip
  • st/s – stitch/es
  • (…) – indicates stitch count at end of round
  • […] – repeat the instructions in brackets

Special Stitches

Popcorn stitch (pc): Work 5 dc stitches in the same stitch. Remove your hook from the last dc and insert it under both loops of the first dc. Grab the dropped loop with your hook and pull it through the stitch. Ch 1 to close.

Picot: Ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Finished Size

The finished coaster measures approximately 4.75″ x 4.75″ (12cm x 12cm). Size may vary depending on tension and materials used.

Gauge

3.25″ (8.5cm) across after R7.

Notes

  • The ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. You will be joining to the first hdc of each round and placing the first hdc of the next round in the same st as joining.

Pattern Instructions

Sunflower (starting in dark brown)

Make a magic ring

R1: Ch1, 8 hdc in magic ring, sl st to first hdc (8)

R2: Ch 1, [hdc-inc] x8, sl st to first hdc (16)

R3: Ch 1, [hdc, hdc-inc] x8, sl st to first hdc (24)

R4: Ch 1, hdc, hdc-inc, [2 hdc, hdc-inc] x7, hdc, sl st to first hdc (32)

R5: Ch 1, [3 hdc, hdc-inc] x8, sl st to first hdc (40)

R6: 2 hdc, hdc-inc, [4 hdc, hdc-inc] x7, 2 hdc, sl st to first hdc (48)

R7: [5 hdc, hdc-inc] x8, change to yellow in last hdc, sl st to first hdc (56)

At this point my coaster measured 3.25″ across. Adjust hook size as necessary.

R8: Ch 1, [sc, pc] x28, sl st to first sc (28 sc, 28 pc)

R9: [Sk pc, [hdc, 2 dc, picot, 2 dc, hdc] in sc st, sk pc, sl st in next st] x14 – the last sl st is made into the closing sl st from R8 (14 petals)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

You may block your coaster if you wish (I didn’t feel it was necessary) otherwise gently tug and shape each petal into place.

  1. I am making this sunflower coaster but I don’t understand the instructions for [2 hdc, hdc-inc] x7 Does that mean 4 hdc per stitch? What is the difference between 2 hdc and hdc-inc?

    1. Hi, the [2 hdc, hdc-inc] is 1 hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the same st, repeat the instructions in brackets 7 times. Hope that helps.

  2. Thanks Fay for providing these lovely coaster patterns. As a newbie at crochet they are brilliant to practice stitches. Loved doing the sunflowers. My first project was the little cat that you designed. It was really encouraging to be able to complete my first project after struggling to get the hang of crochet after many years of knitting!
