I've been listening to podcasts during my lunch hour at work trying to find ways to keep my sanity. One of the episodes of one of my favorite podcasts "Happier" (highly recommend btw) talked about clutter and using what you have. I don't know about you but the first thing that came to my mind was, well, yarn. While part of me loves to stock pile all of the yarn, a house can only hold so much yarn *despite my best efforts*. When I noticed my standard yarn/craft storage space started to overflow into our living space- I knew I had a problem. Plus, I've just been struggling lately with feeling overwhelmed (and underwhelmed) with everything!
I think the extra clutter in my space is getting to me and I need to USE THIS YARN. So now I'm on a mission to find projects to make with my million skeins of yarn. It's going to require me to get creative and to resist the urge to buy more yarn. Despite the fact that I have SO. MUCH. YARN- I never seem to have the right yarn for the project I want to make. I had been wanting to re-create my flower candle coaster in Fall colors so it looked more sunflowery. The problem? I didn't have the right colors in the weight of yarn I wrote the pattern in... the solution? Re-write the pattern! If you have a stash of Red Heart Super Saver yarn you've been wanting to use- this pattern is a great stash buster!
I'm loving how these coasters add just the right amount of fall essence to our living room. (Side note- it really didn't need any more *essence* but I just love fall!) These are cute and will keep your surfaces from getting hot as your candles burn down. Just like the original flower candle coaster- this pattern is designed to fit any candles that are 4 inches in diameter (or smaller). I have a lot of Bath and Body Works three wick or the big Yankee candle jars that fit perfectly on these!

Materials:
4.5 mm hook
Worsted Weight Yarn (4)- I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn- I used “Carrot”, “Gold” “Coffee” and “Café” to make the sunflower version
Yarn Needle
Abbreviations:
SC : Single Crochet
HDC: Half Double Crochet
DC: Double Crochet
CH: Chain
SL ST: Slip Stitch
Special Stitches:
Mini Pique- Chain 3, sl st into back of first chain
Pattern:
Color 1: (I used “Coffee”)
R1: 8 HDC in magic circle (8 hdc)
R2: ch 2, 2 HDC in each st across, sl st to starting hdc (16 hdc)
R3: ch 2, 2 HDC in each st across, sl st to starting hdc (32 hdc)
R4: ch 2, 1 hdc in each st across, sl st to starting hdc (32 hdc)
R5: ch 2, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st, sl st to starting hdc (48 sc)
R6: ch 2, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 st, sl st to starting hdc (64 sc)
Finish off.
Color 2: (I used “Café”)
Reattach yarn.
*Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next st, ch 4, sk 3 sp, *dc in next 2 st, ch 4, skip 3 (rep from * to end, sl st to join.
**In order to begin the crocodile stitches you will have to slip stitch down your first dc.
*Sl st into Ch3 from previous row, ch 3, *dc 4 around 1st post, dc at top of post, ch 2, sl st in the back of the 1st chain (mini pique), dc in the same stitch at the top of post, 4 dc around 2nd post (This is your first petal/crocodile stitch). Skip 1 sc, sc in next, skip next sc, dc around next post, rep * to end. Sl st to first ch on the first petal.
Finish Off.
Color 3: (I used “Carrot”)
Reattach yarn a chain space of the previous color.
*Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same ch 4, *skip over the petal to the next chain 4, chain 6, dc 2 in ch space, rep from * around, sl stitch to join.
*Slip stitch down first dc, ch 3, *dc 4 around 1st post, dc at top of post, ch 2, sl st in the back of the 1st chain (mini pique), dc in the same stitch at the top of post, 4 dc around 2nd post (this is your first petal/crocodile stitch), dc around next post, rep * to end, sl st to first petal.
Finish Off.
Color 4: (I used “Gold”)
Reattach yarn in chain space of the previous color
Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same ch 6, *skip over the petal to the next chain 6, chain 7, dc 2 in ch space, rep from * around, sl stitch to join.
*Slip stitch down first dc, ch 3, *dc 4 around 1st post, dc at top of post, ch 2, sl st in the back of the 1st chain (mini pique), dc in the same stitch at the top of post, 4 dc around 2nd post (this is your first petal/crocodile stitch), dc around next post, rep * to end, sl st to first petal.
Finish Off.
Sew in Ends.
