Sugar Plum beginner crochet sweater

A beginner crochet sweater in a box design made in gorgeous cluster like, textured fabric.

Below is the FREE pattern in sizes 2/3 years, 4/5 years, 6/7 years, 8/9 years, 10/12 years, Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, XXLarge

Stitch combinations

I have been working a lot on new patterns, I had a simple crochet sweater design in mind but couldn't find the right stitch for the finish, The cluster stitch was the perfect choice as it's finish is beautiful and really easy!

So, for this pattern it's all about going back to basics, with a little twist.

If you know your Dc and Sc then you're going to really enjoy this sweater!

The sweater design is a box sweater, straight box body and straight sleeves, nothing fancy! However, using this stitch combo the sweater is transformed into a gorgeous, everyday sweater that looks like it was really intricate to make!

You can keep how easy it was a secret, up to you! (Wink, wink)

Finding the right yarn

I have used king Cole baby in "silver" for this simple crochet sweater. Firstly the colour is stunning, it may not do it justice in the photos but it has a lovely silver icy tone to it, it's not a light grey!

It's also super smooth and soft and this just makes the sweater even more comfortable and wearable...that's the plan! Right?!

You can use any DK yarn you have or would like to try. I have a feeling this sweater would look great in all colours, I myself will be making a few more to add to our winter wardrobes.

Gauge info, you will need to read this!

So, when I began working up this sweater in my DK yarn and suggested hook size, I didn't LOVE it. The Dc stitch packs down against the Sc stitch and it made it a little bit stiff. I decided after a few swatches that this stitch combo worked best with a 6mm hook and the finished sweater is perfect using this hook and yarn!

This may sound a bit barmy and may confuse you (I really hope not) so I've made a swatch for you as the gauge won't match!

Use any DK yarn and a 6mm hook

Complete a swatch as follows: 15 stitches and X 4 rows of alternate Dc and Sc - Dc, Sc across, on the next row placing the opposite stitch above (Dc on top of Sc etc) = 4" wide X 2” high

The video tutorial will help you with this if it's a bit confusing! Simple crochet box sweater tutorial

Your chains will always be the 1st stitch in a row

Row 3: Repeat Sc,Dc across (Sc stitches will go in the previous row Dc, Dc stitches will go into the previous rows Dc)

This will give you a bumpy cluster like fabric.

If you lose where you are and forget which stitch comes next, there is always a loose stitch for the Dc stitches to work into (see picture below)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your piece measures

You now have the space for your neckline and your shoulders are in place.

Continue your alternate rows of Dc, Sc (Sc, Dc) until your back piece is the same length as your front piece.

When working into your chain space make sure you work the correct number of stitches (the same number you skipped in previous row.

If you find it difficult to see the chains, make sure the chain is not twisted.

Insert your hook into the chain space, 1 hoop above hook 2 hoops below hook, I find this is easier to find the correct chain

When you have finished the back piece, you will have a long rectangle with an opening in the middle.

The body piece is now complete, we will neaten the neckline and add a hem later.

Fold your piece in half (neckline along the top, there are no right or wrong sides at this stage) and seam up the sides –
