Gauge:

Gauge: 10 cm square= 11 sc rows and 12 sc stitches

Size:

The bag’s width is 44 cm 17.3″, it’s height is 36 cm, 14″, and the base depth is 14 cm 5.5″

Skill level: Beginner

Abbreviations and Glossary (US Terms):

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • ss – slip stitch
  • bo – bobble stitch

Special Stitches:

Bobble stitch

Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull through two loops. as if you are doing the first part of a double crochet (DC) (2 loops on the hook); repeat it until you have 5 HDC on your hook and 1 initial loop (total 6 loops on the hook); yarn over and pull through all 6 loops (1 loop on the hook – pull pretty tight, so your bobble really pops up); and sc in the next stitch.

Notes:

  • The pattern is written in us terms.
  • The front and back panels are worked separately and joined to each other through single crochet.
  • The base of the bag is then worked. And the handles are then sewed to the bag.
  • Chain one is NOT considered as the first stitch throughout this pattern
  • I will be referring to Jute as color A. And the beige cotton as color B

Now lets move directly to this Crochet tote bag pattern:

The back panel of the bag

With a 3.5 mm hook, Chain 58

Row 1. Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each other chain. so you have 57 SC, chain 1 and turn
Row 2-49. sc in each stitch in the row, Chain 1 and turn

The base of the bag

Row 1. Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each other chain. so you have 57 SC, chain 1 and turn
Row 2-47. sc in each stitch in the row, Chain 1 and turn

The handles

With a 3.5 mm hook, and cotton yarn, Chain 127

Row 1. Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each other chain. so you have 126 SC, chain 1 and turn
Row 2-6. sc in each stitch in the row, Chain 1 and turn

After finishing the last row don’t cut the yarn,

Work one sc in each of the 6 rows on the short edge of the rectangle, then slip stitch into the first 7 stitches from the other side as you see in the picture bellow.

Now fold the handle into half and Single crochet the two long edges together. (as you see in this video).

When you reach the other end of the handle. Leave the last 7 stitches, work one slip stitch in each one of them and one sc in each row from the short edge.

Now cut yarn and weave in ends.

To make the handle more sturdy and not stretchy, you can insert a robe or I used a cotton draw string from old shorts :D.

Attach it to a safety pin insert it through the handle. Then secure it by sewing it to the handle from both ends of the handle.

Repeat the whole process to make the second handle.

Assembly and finishing

First we are going to join the front and back panels to each other. Put the front panel on the back one with the right side facing you.
Using jute yarn you are going to single crochet together the edges of both panels from the right and left sides.

Note that if you started from the right side joining them from the bottom towards the top. You are going to reverse the direction on the other side so that the right side of the stitch is facing the front of the bag from both sides.

To add the base.
You are going to align the base’s center with the single crochet seam you have just made to join the front and back panels. Then with the same technique you are going to sc the base to the panels as demonstrated by the dashed line in the picture bellow.

Then you are going to continue with the same technique along the whole base as demonstrated by the white dashed line in the picture bellow.

Now the last step in the assembly is to sew the handles to the bag.
Align the outer edges of the handles to the second bobble of the first row from each side as you see in the picture bellow. Then sew the handle to the bag along the dashed line using matching yarn or matching thread that is sturdy.

The last finishing step is to make a last sc row along the seam on the sides and the base using color B (cotton beige yarn)

I hope you liked this crochet pattern. If you made one, share it with me on Instagram. I would love to see how you adapted it and what variations and colors you used

Take care and happy crocheting!!
