BB-8 Inspired Hat :: Free Crochet Pattern

Jan 8, 2016

Have you figured out yet that my family is huge into Star Wars?  We love all of it.  EVEN THE PREQUELS, PEOPLE!  You can find other SW loving goodies that I’ve shared along the way HERE, if you so choose.  But right now, I hope you at least stick around for today’s latest crochet pattern: a BB-8 hat!

It always turns out that the droids are my favorite characters in the Star Wars series.  R2-D2, C-3PO, Chopper and now BB-8.  They’re full of sass, are hysterical and yet are the most amazing companions and backup whenever you need them.

Droids = Awesome.  Crocheted Hats = Awesome.
Crocheted Droid Hats = The most awesome combination ever.

Are you ready to crochet up this cutie?
**Remember, you’re more than welcome to sell finished products from this pattern.  I only ask that you give me credit and link back to this pattern.  Please play nice and don’t claim the pattern or photos as your own.  If you do end up making a hat from my pattern, I’d love to see the results!  Link me to your blog, email me a photo (katy@handmadeescapade) or post it to my Facebook page.  I want to see what you can do!!

I am a big fan of attaching the extra pieces using Fabri-Tac glue.  It’s quick to dry, works fast, and holds really well.  You just have to be careful when applying it because it will stay wherever it falls.  You can also sew the pieces on with a tapestry needle and matching yarn…it just takes longer and I tend to take the lazy way out. 😉

Now go pat yourself on the back for making such an adorably [nerdy] hat!  Brace yourself for a thousand people asking you if you’ll make them one too.  It’ll happen.

How do you change the pattern to be smaller? Have you already written that up? I’m looking to make this for my 3 year old daughter who loves star wars!

So I just finished this pattern, thank you. I made it for an 8 year old, using the original pattern, which was way too big (I know, duh). And then I made a smaller version using the same row counts but using hdc instead of dc, and then for the circles, using 4mm (F) hook instead of a 5 (H). What I can’t figure out is how you did the white over the orange in your pattern. It’s not detailed in the pattern. For the first hat, I crochet a swatch and sewed it in, the same way I did the circles. For the second, instead of cutting off the white yarn before switching to the last rounds of orange and grey, I left it in place, and then after the rest of the hat was complete, I did a slip stitch overlaying the orange (3 rows of either 11 or 12 stitches, I just can’t remember right now) and then finished that off and added the circles.
