Spring Party Girl Crochet Dress

Materials

  • Drops Safran (100% sportweight cotton, 175 yds per 50g): 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) skeins sage green and 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) off white
  • Suggested hook sizes: 3.25mm [US D-3] (smaller hook) and 3.5mm [US E-4] (larger hook), or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Yarn needle
  • 1 (1, 1, 1, 1) size 5/8” round button
  • Sewing thread (optional) (for attaching button)
  • Sewing needle (optional) (for attaching button)

Note: Larger hook is used predominantly throughout the entire pattern except for some areas of trim and embellishment, where the smaller hook will be used.

A swatch of single crochet worked with larger hook across 22 stitches for 26 rows is equal to approximately 4”.

Special Stitches

Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog): Insert hook in st indicated, yo, pull lp through, insert hook in next st, yo, pull lp through, yo, pull through 3 lps on hook.

Cluster (cl): Yo, insert hook in st indicated, yo, pull lp through, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, *yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull lp through, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, rep from * once more, yo, pull through 4 lps on hook.

Switching Colors Just prior to pulling the last loop through to complete a stitch, drop first color. Yarn over and pull through loop of second color to complete the stitch. Proceed with second color.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

Skirt

Skirt is worked vertically (side-to-side). The remaining is worked horizontally along the sides of the rows of the Skirt portion.

With larger hook and green, ch 42 (48, 48, 54, 54).

Row 1 (RS): Sk first ch, sc in each remaining ch, turn: 41 (47, 47, 53, 53) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of first 10 sc, *cl (see Special Stitches above) in next sc, sc in each of next 5 sc, rep * to last sc, sc in last sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across to last 5 sc, sl st in next sc, turn, leaving remaining 4 sc unworked.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, sc in same sc as sl st, sc in each of 4 remaining sc, turn.

Rows 6-7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 8: Ch 1, sc in each of first 13 sc, *cl in next sc, sc in each of next 5 sc. Rep from * to last 4 sc, cl in next sc, sc in each of last 3 sc, turn.

Rows 9-13: Rep Rows 3-7.

Rep Rows 2-13 throughout until a total of 152 (156, 158, 168, 174) rows have been completed from beginning, fasten off.

Note: When counting rows, count them from the bottom of the Skirt portion since the waist side will have fewer rows due to the short row shaping.

Dress Hem

Row 1: With WS facing you and larger hook, join green with sl st a corner of bottom edge of skirt, ch 1, sc in side of each row across bottom edge of skirt, turn: 152 (156, 158, 168, 174) sc.

Rows 2-6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Fasten off after final row.

Bodice

Row 1: With RS facing and larger hook, join white with sl st at corner of top edge of Skirt, ch 1, sc in side of each row across top edge of skirt, turn: 102 (104, 106, 112, 116) sc.

Rows 2-6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Change to green on final st of final row.

Rows 7-8 (10, 10, 12, 12): Now with green, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Split for Armholes

Note: For this section, you will continue working on the same piece, but you will be working on only one portion at a time, starting with the first back then the front and then the other back.

First Bodice Back

Row 1: Ch 1, sc across 24 (24, 24, 25, 26) sc only, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked: 24 (24, 24, 25, 26) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each remaining sc across, turn: 23 (23, 23, 24, 25) sc.

Rows 3-18 (18, 20, 20, 22): Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Fasten off after final row.

Neckline: With RS facing, count across 9 (10, 11, 11, 11) sc from armhole, join green with sl st in next sc, ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each remaining sc across, turn: 8 (9, 10, 10, 10) sc.

Bodice Front

Row 1: Returning to the unworked sc of lower Bodice, count across 4 (4, 4, 6, 6) sc and join green with sl st in next sc, ch 1, sc across 46 (48, 50, 50, 52) sc only, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked: 46 (48, 50, 50, 52) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each remaining sc to last 2 sc, sc2tog, turn: 44 (46, 48, 48, 50) sc.

Rows 3-8 (8, 10, 10, 10): Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Front Neckline: Ch 1, sc in each of next 12 (13, 14, 14, 14) sc, sc2tog, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked: 13 (14, 15, 15, 15) sc.

Next row: Sl st across first 4 sc, ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each remaining sc, turn: 8 (9, 10, 10, 10) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each remaining sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn: 36 (36, 38, 38, 44) sc.

Rows 3-5: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Rows 6-9: Rep rows 2-5: 38 (38, 40, 40, 46) sc.

Rows 10-13: Rep rows 2-5: 40 (40, 42, 42, 48) sc.

For size 24 months only: Rows 14-15: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. Do not fasten off.

Sleeve Cap

Row 1: Sl st across first 2 (2, 2, 2, 3) sc, ch 1, sc in each sc across to last 2 (2, 2, 2, 3) sc, turn, leaving remaining sc unworked: 36 (36, 38, 38, 42) sc.

Rows 2-18 (18, 20, 20, 22): Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Note: The following two rows will form the gather at the top of the sleeve. Don’t be tempted to work sc2tog across; it makes unsightly holes. Just try to keep your sc even and don’t lose tension.

Next row: Ch 1, work 19 (19, 19, 19, 21) sc evenly across, skipping stitches as necessary to make it relatively even across, turn.

Next row: Rep previous row except work 10 (10, 10, 10, 12) sc evenly across, fasten off.

Finishing

With a stitch marker or contrasting piece of yarn, mark the back 2.5” down from the neckline. With yarn needle and green, seam shoulders, seam back up to mark, set in and seam sleeves.

Neckline Trim

Round 1: With RS facing and with smaller hook and white, join yarn with sl st at either shoulder seam, ch 1, sc evenly around neckline and along sides of top 2.5” from neckline with 2 sc at each corner of back, sl st to first sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, with [sc, ch 6, sc] at top corner of Right Back of Bodice (buttonhole loop) and 2 sc at top corner of Left Back of Bodice. Sl st to first sc. Cut off.

Bow

Larger Piece:

Round 1: With smaller hook and white, ch 31, sl st to first ch to form a ring, ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to first sc.

Rounds 2-7: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc. Cut off after final rnd.

Smaller Piece:

Round 1: With smaller hook and white, ch 11, sl st to first ch to form a ring, ch 1, sc in each ch around, sl st to first sc.

Rounds 2-5: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to first sc. Cut off after final rnd.

Assembly Insert smaller piece into larger piece, shaping to form Bow. With white and yarn needle, attach Bow as shown in photograph.

Button Using either white or a coordinating sewing thread, attach button across from buttonhole ring. Weave in all ends carefully and securely.
