Slouchy Bean Beanie – Free Crochet Pattern

I don’t know what my favorite thing is about this Slouchy bean Beanie! If it’s the Yarn, the pretty tweed, the color, the stitch…..I love it all!

I have been wanting to incorporate this stitch into a beanie for awhile and finally did. I used the Bean Stitch for the majority of this pattern. If you haven’t ever done the Bean Stitch and want a more in depth, picture tutorial for this stitch alone, then go check out my tutorial for it HERE.

The Yarn –

This was my 1st time ever using Wool of the Andes Tweed from WeCrochet in the color North Pole Heather. I absolutely loved it! The color and quality is amazing. It was perfect for this beanie.

It’s like a pale ice blue color with all the little bits of tweed. It would be so pretty for winter, especially pictures up against the snow…..so pretty!

Things you will need:

• 2 Skeins of Wool of the Andes Tweed. I used the color North Pole Heather. It uses 1.5 skeins to complete the hat, approx. 165 yards of worsted weight yarn.
• 5.50mm / I Crochet Hook
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors

Finished Measurements –  Will fit an average adult head of 21” – 23”. Beanie measures approx. 8” tall and 9.5” across the brim laid flat.

Gauge – 12 st x 12 r = 4” in bean stitch

Abbreviation:

• ch = chain
• sc = single crochet
• blsc = single crochet in the back loops only
• mc = magic circle / ring
• t = turn
• st = stitch (es)
• Sl st = slip stitch

Special Stitch (es) –

• Bean Stitch (BS) –
  • Insert Hook into stitch, yarn over pull up a loop, yarn over insert into same stitch, yarn over pull up a loop, yarn over insert into stitch again, yarn over pull up a loop, you should have 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on the hook. Chain stitch to complete bean stitch.

• Bean Stitch 2 Beans Together (BS2tog) –
  • Insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into same stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into same stitch again, pull up loop, insert hook into NEXT loop, pull up a loop, yarn over insert hook into same stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over insert hook into same stitch again, pull up loop (11 loops on hook) yarn over, pull yarn through all 11 loops on hook. Chain 1 to complete stitch

Notes –

• You will make the brim first and slip stitch it together to form a circle and then work the beanie up.
• Due to the nature of the bean stitch, it is meant to be worked back and forth, so that means that this beanie is NOT worked in the round. You will turn your work after completing each row.

Go!

Brim –

Row 1: ch 10, sc in 2nd st from hook and in each st across (9)

Row 2: ch 1, t, blsc in each st across (9)

Repeat row 2 until piece measures 18” unstretched.

Fold the Brim in half, sl st the edges together

Row 3: Ch 1, evenly place 72 sc around the edge of your brim, sl st into 1st st (72)

Row 4: ch 1, * bs, sk next st*

repeat * to * around, sl st to join (36 bean st)

Row 5-9: ch 1, TURN, bs in each bean stitch (remember you are placing the bean stitch in the space after the bean) around, sl st to join (36 bean stitch)

Row 10: ch 1, TURN, * bs2tog, bs in 4 st* repeat * to * around, sl st to join (30 bean stitch)

Row 11 – 12: ch 1, TURN, bs in each bean stitch around, sl st to join (30 bean stitch)

Row 13: ch 1, TURN, * bs2tog, bs in 3 st* repeat * to * around, sl st to join (24 bean stitch)

Row 14 – 15: ch 1, TURN, bs in each bean stitch around, sl st to join (24 bean stitch)

Row 16: ch 1, TURN, * bs2tog, bean st in 2 st* repeat * to * around, sl st to join (18 bean stitch)

Row 17: ch 1, TURN, bs in each bean stitch around, sl st to join (18 bean stitch)

Row 18: ch 1, TURN, * bs2tog, bs* repeat from * to * around, sl st to join (12 bean stitch)

Row 19: ch 1, TURN, bs2tog around, sl st to join (6 bean stitch)

Cut yarn. Use tail to close the top.

Weave in all ends.
