Sharp tapestry crochet bag – free written pattern

Hello,
I’m still a little bit hooked on tapestry crochet. I had to study on Youtube this type of crocheting for a while before I started.
I made another, very simple shoulder bag in my favourite grey color and I wrote a beginner’s version pattern of it for you.
I hope I’ll soon get better because there are so many very beautiful motives all over the Internet.

Size: width cca 38cm x height cca 30cm (15”x 12”), circular bottom diameter cca 25cm (10”), handle drop cca 30cm (12”), the finished size will really depend on material you’ll use.

You need:
Acrylic yarn or cotton of your choice (I used cca 250 grams of acrylic yarn – 150grams of dark grey, 100grams of light grey)
The Crochet hook suggested for your material – I used G/4mm
Yarn Needle, markers
A sufficient amount off cotton for the lining (you don’t have to use cotton, and you don’t need to line the purse – it’s optional)
30 cm (12”) zipper
Two pieces cca 65cm(26”) long and 4cm(1,6”) wide material for the handle

Terms/Abbreviations: I used US terminology
ch       chain
slst     slip stitch
sc        single stitch
dc       double crochet
st        stitch
dec.    decrease
*-*      repeat

Bottom and body of the bag
The bag is worked in circular crochet method, beginning at the center of bottom, and ending up with edge of the bag. Slst. join at end of each round. Don’t turn, but continue in same direction.
Round 1: I started with dark grey color. Magic ring or ch4, join with slst in first ch, ch3, 11dc in ring, join with slst to top of beg ch3 (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch3, dc in same dc, 2dc in each dc around, join with slst to top of 1st ch3 (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch3, *2dc in next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * around, join with slst (36 dc)
Round 4: Follow the chart bellow. On end of the round you should have 48 dc.
Round 5: (60 dc)
Round 6: (72 dc)
Round 7: (84 dc)
Round 8: (96 dc)
Round 9: (108 dc)
Round 10: (120 dc)
Round 11: (132 dc)
Round 12: (144 dc). I stop increasing here.
Round 13: From now on I just crochet dc over dc – each round have 144 dc’s. I crochet 23 dc in dark grey and 1 dc in light grey – repeated 6 times all together.
Round 14: 23 dc’s in dark grey and 1 dc in light grey – repeat 6 times all together.
Round 15: 21 dc’s in dark grey and 3 dc’s in light grey – repeat 6 times all together.

Rounds 26 - 30: Each of those rounds I crochet in light grey – 144 dc’s.
Round 31: I found the middle light grey dc between two dark grey dc’s in round 25. In this round I made it 1st dark grey dc (you can see it on the picture bellow) and 23 dc’s in light grey – repeat 6 times all together.
Round 32: 3 dc’s in dark grey and 21 dc’s in light grey – repeat 6 times all together.

Round 41: 21 dc’s in dark grey and 3 dc’s in light grey – repeat 6 times all together.
Round 42: 23 dc’s in dark grey and 1 dc in light grey – repeat 6 times all together.
Rounds 43 - 44: Each of those rounds I crochet in dark grey – 144 dc’s.
Round 45.: I bordered the bag with “crab stitch” (somewhere they call it reverse sc).
Fasten off.

Lining:
I put a lining in this bag.  I sewed it on machine, then sewed it in by hand, to the second last round of the bag’s body. I suppose, you could sew the lining in by machine as well.

Handle:
This time I bought the handles. I sewed them between the bag and lining. You will need two pieces cca 65cm(26”) long and 4cm(1,6”) wide of material for these handles.

Zipper:

I’m adding zippers to most of my bags. You can find two options on how to add the zipper in these two free links bellow:

There it is. You should have a nice shoulder bag now or an inspiration for one at least.
If you come up with any problems or difficulties, write to me, and I’ll be more than happy to help.
Have a nice week
Clara
