crochet pattern sarong beach cover up summer ideas

I have been meaning to make a beach coverup for a while now. Anything fringy, airy, boho is right up my alley,  and I feel more comfortable with a bit of coverage between sunning and swimming (although I don’t do a lot of sunning!)

A few ideas of how I wanted to do it bounced around my head, but I ultimately landed on designing something worn around the waist instead of a poncho-type cover-up, although I love that style as well. This one is simple, cute and fast to make.

I did a lot of research on which yarn to use. The right yarn would dry quickly, so this eliminated cotton. A crochet beach coverup would also need to be light when wet, but also just light in general, so it could be comfortable worn on a hot, sunny day.

I decided to use Biggo, which is a bulky weight yarn by WeCrochet. It’s half super wash wool and half nylon, which makes it easy care, and quick to dry when it’s wet. The yarn is also so light and airy, even fluffy, almost like a soufflé. It’s so lovely, I highly recommend it for this crochet sarong!

PATTERN:

Size M/L: (scroll down for sizing adjustments)
Worked from the bottom up.
Ch 63. This chain, when stretched as far as it will stretch should measure approx. 40″.

IMPORTANT: the chain’s
fully stretched length is the correct way to get the measurement. If the chain’s length is able to stretch past this measurement,  it will be too large and loose when completed and won’t fit when you tie the ties around your hips.
Foundation: Multiples of 4 +3
To size up or down, work a chain so it is snug around your hips or waist, wherever you plan to wear it.

1. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each ch. Turn. (62 sts)
2.- 25.  Ch 2. Dc in same st. Dc in next st. *Ch 2. Sk 2 sts. Dc in next 2 sts* work 15 times. Turn
(don’t turn after row 25). Continuing where you left off without turning: Ch 37 (creates one tie). Turn. (62 sts)

26. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook and working in BLO, sc back down the ch. Sc in each st across your piece (working through both loops), making sure to sc in each chain. Ch 37 (creates the other tie)  Turn. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook and working in BLO, sc back down the ch. Flip the tie so the top of your sc meets the bottom of the next st.  Sl st in the bottom of the next sc, making the tie look flush with the top of your piece.
Tie off.

CONSTRUCTION:

Optional: Add fringe!
This piece looks absolutely lovely with fringe. Cut your yarn pieces about 9″ long and use 3 pieces for each fringe tuft. Place the fringe about 1 1/2″ apart across the bottom and up both sides. The suggested yardage includes enough to make fringe for your piece.
