Saddlebrook Cape Scarf

Easily one of my favorite makes of 2016, the Saddlebrook Cape Scarf is snuggly and chic at the same time - my favorite combination! Part cardigan, part poncho, part wrap, part scarf, this easy-to-wear piece can be worn under a coat or thrown over a fitted jacket and will instantly bring your ensemble up a level. It's also the ultimate cozy couch potato wrap! My ongoing collaborations with Lion Brand Yarn are so fun because I get to play with all types of yarn and it pushes me out of my comfort level to try new things, or in this case, to use a popular yarn in a new way. I have admittedly never used Homespun yarn until I started this project, and I was so excited for the challenge to develop something that would elevate it to something super sophisticated. I'm so pleased with the way this cape scarf turned out, and I hope it inspires others to use Homespun in new ways.

This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are half double crochet, foundation half double crochet, single crochet, and chaining and skipping stitches.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Foundation Half Double Crochet (Fhdc) – The fhdc stitch is worked when creating the armhole. To begin, working into the same stitch you just came out of, yarn over, insert hook into the stitch and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and draw through only the first loop – this “chain” just created will serve as the bottom of this first stitch. Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops. The first fhdc has just been created. To create all subsequent fhdc sts, yarn over, insert hook into the bottom “chain” stitch of the previous stitch and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and draw through only the first loop, creating the bottom “chain” of this new stitch. Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops to complete the stitch.

Note: To change color, work the last yarn over of the previous row with the new color. Work all rows containing sc stitches loosely as they can tighten up quickly.
