Puff Dreams Table Runner- Crochet Pattern

Erin from CraftsEverywhere with you today for a fun spring project that’s perfect for giving your table decor a fun twist.

I’ve been loving projects that are made up of small pieces that you can put together lately. They’re so easy to take with you for traveling in the car or plane and so versatile. You can piece these together so many different ways (and I did!) to find the style that works best for you.

This is a great project for any cotton scraps you’ve got laying around as you can get several doilies from a small skein of yarn. It can be made in a color theme or solid and will make a great heirloom gift or table decoration for holidays or birthdays.

This is an easy beginner friendly project that is made in multiple pieces and then whip stitched together to make the table runner.

You’ll need a 6 mm J hook, worsted weight cotton yarn and a tapestry needle.

If you’d like an ad-free version, you can find that on Etsy or Ravelry. Let’s get started!

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner (Easy)

Materials

  • Amour Crochet Hook J (6.0mm) Art. No 1049

  • Worst weight (4) cotton yarn
    • Approx. 15-40 yards per doily
    • I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton and Lily Sugar N Cream for the samples.
  • Extra yarn for seaming
  • Darning Needle Set – Art. No 3121
  • Locking Stitch Markers – Art. No 353

Gauge

Rounds 1-3 of pattern measure approx. 3” across.

Getting close to gauge is all that matters for this pattern!

Terms

  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • mc – magic circle
  • sk – skip
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Notes

  • *Asterisks mark a repeated stitch pattern*.
  • Your stitch count is in parentheses at the end of relevant rounds.
  • The chain does not count as a stitch.
  • To make the puff stitch:
    1. Yarn over, insert hook into the skipped st.
    2. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Leave the loop on your hook. Yarn over.
    3. Repeat step 2 two more times (3 total repeats).
    4. After yarning over the final time, pull through all the loops on your hook. Ch1.

  • I recommend spot cleaning or hand washing this table runner after it is pieced together. Mist block to return it to original shape and flatten out any edges.
  • Make as many puff doilies as desired to piece together your table runner. I recommend picking a color theme or this would also be very pretty in a solid color.
  • For the table runner pictured, make 7 small size, 9 medium size and 8 large size

Pattern

Round 1 – Mc, ch1, 12 hdc in circle, join to top of first hdc of the round (12).

Round 2 – Ch1, sk st with ch, hdc in next st, ch1, puff stitch in the skipped st, ch1. *Sk next st, hdc, ch1, puff st in skipped st, ch1*. Repeat from * to * to end. Join to beginning of the round, ch1 (6 puffs).

Round 3 – Ch1, *hdc,* join to top of first hdc of the round (24).

**End here for size small and tie off, leaving a tail for weaving in.**

Round 4 – Repeat round 2 (12).

Round 5 – Ch1, place 3 hdc sts into the sides/top of each puff (you will be skipping at least one st per puff), join to beginning of the round (36).

**End here for size medium and tie off, leaving a tail for weaving in.**

Round 6 – Repeat round 2 (18).

Round 7 – Ch1, place 3 hdc sts into the top of each puff (you will be skipping at least one st per puff), join to beginning of the round (54).

**End here for size large and tie off, leaving a tail for weaving in.**

Finishing

Sew in all ends on individual doilies. Lay all pieces out in desired shape, pin and whip stitch together. I started with the 8 large ones that form the center and added the smaller sizes one by one after.
