Have you ever wanted to crochet a colorwork hat, but you aren't sure where to start? The Crochet Hat Pine Free Pattern is not only cozy and warm to wear, but a fun crochet fair isle hat. Crochet colorwork adds a modern twist to your fall or winter wardrobe.

Don't let crochet colorwork scare you at all, especially with a video tutorial, you can crochet this crochet hat pattern. And with the cold weather each season, a warm hat on your head makes the chilly days bearable and stylish. If you would like to practice a top-down construction, the Macchiato Crochet Beanie Pattern is a great place to start.

About the Crochet Stitch:

Did you notice this stitch looks more knit than crochet? The Split Single Crochet (ssc), also known as the waistcoat stitch, is a great knit-mimic crochet stitch.

The trick to working this stitch with ease is to pull up your second loop on your hook. Because we enter the crochet stitch lower than we normally would, it's important to pull that loop up higher than we normally would with regular single crochet. This stitch shouldn't create extra tension in your hands, and with a little practice it will work up quickly.

Love the Yarn?

For the most part, fair isle crochet work looks best in wool yarn. Why is wool yarn the best to use? Wool has a 'memory' that helps your stitches stay where you want them. This is important when it comes to placing colorwork.

Each stitch is like a pixel, and all the pixels together make an image. So wool is like coloring in the lines. It also helps with lessening the garment stretch over time.

For this reason, I chose to work with Wool of the Andes Yarn from WeCrochet. This is a worsted weight yarn with over 90 colors to choose from. Can you imagine more color combinations?

Allergic to wool? Or perhaps you want a different fiber? Check out these yarn substitutions:

Brava Worsted
Snuggle Puff
Shine Worsted
Swish Worsted (really soft merino wool if you are worried about itchiness)

The Pine Colorwork Crochet Hat is worked in rounds from top-down, in fair isle crochet. A single crochet ribbing is then worked in rows around the bottom of the hat. A pompom is placed on top and then it’s ready to wear.

When doing the colorwork the yarn will be carried along the back in the fair isle style. Try to not carry color for more than 3 stitches so your floats aren’t too long. You can catch/trap the yarn behind a stitch to keep the floats consistent. To read more about colorwork please visit: https://brianakdesigns.com/ways-to-colorwork-in-crochet/

For the colorwork instructions, Color A/White will be abbreviated as (A), Color B/Persimmon Heather as (B), and Color C/Dove Heather (C). All stitches will be worked in a split single crochet.
Example: (B) x 3 = with Color B ssc the next 3 stitches

Special Stitches:

Split Single Crochet (ssc), also known as the waistcoat stitch: Insert hook between the legs of the stitch (on the back of work the hook should be under the horizontal bar and between the upside-down ‘V’ shape as well), yarn over, pull up a loop to the height of a single crochet, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook. Tip: Keep a loose tension so the stitches are easily worked.
