What is a Hexagonal Motif Shawl?

This hexagonal motif shawl is crocheted by joining a hexagon shape, each with 6 sides. The great thing about each piece is you can easily create a stash buster crochet shawl. As a result, the final form is unique with an even number of sides, unlike the triangular shawls, which have 3 sides. As a result, the hexagonal motif shawls tend to have more intricate designs than the triangular ones.

This particular design reminds me of a butterfly. And when I was young we would give our caterpillars milkweed to eat so they could eventually emerge from their cocoons to be beautiful butterflies.

The hexagonal motif shawls are unique in their design and style. Wearing A Hexagon Shawl

Each one of the hexagons is made individually and attached together as you go. And as you can see, lots of colors of hexagons can create a beautiful patchwork piece. So you can take the yarn from your leftover projects and make the half or full hexagon motifs.

Can you use a DK or worsted weight yarn? Absolutely! This pattern uses three strands of fingering weight yarn held together which would be similar to thicker yarns. And a shawl is very flexible in its finished size. So you could make one with one strand of fingering yarn and have more hexagons or use a thicker yarn and get a similar effect.

I'm not going to lie, I think I swatched 15 different ideas for this shawl. All I could think about is how beautiful the yarn is, and I want to do it justice. The stunning array of colors reminds me of a butterfly.

And just like a butterfly, this design didn't start at the end. It started with the same steps as a caterpillar. A lot of hard work, a bit of growth, and lots of snacks haha. As this really started to show its true form, I couldn't help but this process of designing was so similar, hence the name for the pattern.
