Kid’s Vintage Hat Crochet Pattern (CAL for a Cause)

July 10, 2020

The Kid’s Vintage Hat Crochet Pattern is a simple hat made with all half double crochet! And again with the half double crochet in the 3rd loop… I really LOVE using this technique and the texture look it gives.

  1. Hi Breann,
I am a bit confused with round 18-20 of your kid’s vintage hat. Are you able to give some instruction on HD’s in 3rd looping each stitch?
Thank you…I’ve enjoyed making your hats and beanies.

      1. I would also love to make this hat for women who have cancer… Would I just adjust the hook size to a larger hook to make this bigger and also would I crochet more stitches for the circumference to be larger too ?? Please 🙏🥺 if you could respond I would be ever so grateful because I would really love to get back into crocheting hats for kids and adults who have cancer !! I used to do it a long time ago and it was very rewarding and then I’ve gotten sick myself, not with cancer, but this will help me take my mind off of my problems and turn it into something good ! I even was able to get some of the craft stores to donate yarn to me for this cause and I’m going to try to do it again ! I’ll have to update you and let you know how things go–can’t wait to get back into doing these crochet along patterns!

    1. Hi I love this pattern and would love to make it for my grandaughter who us a teen. Any ideas on how to adjust to make it in an adult size

  2. Thank you for this pattern! I made it in periwinkle & added a vintage button to the center of the flower. <3 Love it!

  3. Want to make it for adult of 20 years age, can you help ? And I don’t know how to increase the rounds, I’m a beginner only please help

  4. Please explain Round 22. Do you mean *hdc, sc, sc, sl st, sl st* or…? Love this pattern. I am making unique and beautiful hats for those in my area who are on the alopecia and cancer treatment journeys at no cost to them. Your hat is so pretty and looking forward to making many of them to brighten someone’s day. So glad that I found your website. I truly believe that God led me to your site. Didn’t know that it existed until yesterday! 😀 Thank you for sharing.

    1. Hi! You will hdc in each stitch around. Then sc in the next 2 stitches. And sl st in the net 2 stitches. Then fasten off 🙂 The single crochets and slip stitches are to taper it off before cutting the yarn. Hope this helps!

    1. Yes, do the entire round in hdc. Then sc in the next 2 stitches. Then sl st in the next 2. So it will be 1 full round + 4 stitches

  5. Or do you mean that after you complete the round of hdc, you start the next “round” with one set of sc next 2 and sl st next 2 as the final stitches to complete the project. Sorry to be so confused. Love this pattern. Thanks for hanging in there with me, Breann.

    1. Yes! Start the next round with the 2 sc and 2 sl st. It will only be 4 stitches. It will straighten out the bottom a bit before fastening off 🙂

  6. Sometimes written communication can be tricky. Let me re=state what I think you are saying. On Round 22 , You state there are 70 hdc + 4 stitches. So Round 22 instructions would be hdc every stitch (70 hdc) for that round. Round 23: sc the first two stitches each and the third and fourth stitches are the finishing stitches of sl in each; and then fasten off. Please confirm. Please accept my apologies for the confusion.

    1. I was right there with you about Round 22. It is a little confusing but I completely understand now! Thanks for all of that so I didn’t have to inquire! LOL

  7. My beatiful 9 year old niece is undergoing chemotherapy and has asked me to make this hat for her. Do you have a gauge reference? I have a tendency to crochet rather tightly and need to make my gauge swatches. 🙂

    1. Also, Missy, when I make pretty much any pattern, since I also crochet rather tight instead of loose, I always go with the crochet hook size 1 higher than what it calls for ! I hope this also helps you 🤗☺️🤞🤔!!

  8. I have made this beautiful vintage hat multiple times for girls and women! Love the flower as well and use it on many different patterns. I am committed to crocheting multiple hats for women, men, children who are on the cancer journey and provide them to my cancer center in the area. I also make them for newborns as well. Only use cotton yarn or very soft 100% acrylic. This particular pattern is gorgeous, Breann, and so quick to make. Thank you for sharing your God-given talent with all of us. Keep sharing, please!

  9. I love this hat and your answers! When I get to the last round I won’t struggle because of your clear directions. I am however struggling with round 21. I can’t figure out how to transition back to hdc when finished with round 20. Any help would be appreciated.
