The Kelsey Cowl Free Crochet Pattern – It’s like a snuggly hug

Kelsey Cowl free crochet pattern by DivineDebris.com

Hi everyone! After such a long last week, anyone else ready for a relaxing second week of November? I know I could use a good long time to kick back and relax with a good yarn. This week’s new pattern is super simple and great for a quick project, ya know? To de-stress with a nice design – the Kelsey Cowl crochet pattern.

So this week’s new pattern started with the yarn. I was lucky enough to get to try some new colorways in Felici from We Crochet and I knew I wanted to keep the design simple so it worked great with a variegated yarn. You know how self-striping or variegated yarn gets, you can’t make the design too complex or it gets a bit scrambled or even loses a pattern.

& that’s why I went with simple on this design. A classic dc/sc combo will make this design cozy and easy and give the yarn a chance to shine. I loved watching it stripe, the colors kinda stuck together in a pattern and I really like how it changed a bit over time. It’s fun to watch, if you’re a yarn nerd. HA! And that also makes it super easy to make larger, it’s just multiples of 2. I do hope you like it and have fun making it unique to you!

I hope where ever you are you’re having a great time and being safe and healthy. Hugs friends. Wash your hands and masks.

I was provided the yarn for this pattern by WeCrochet for the purposes of making this design, with compensation. I wasn’t provided the yarn with the expectations of positive or negative reviews but I did enjoy using this yarn, it was the first time I used it and I really like the way it works up and feels sturdy. I will definitely be making another design with it in the future.

Materials

Gauge

  • 14 sc/dc x 14 rows = 4”

Terms/ Stitches used

  • RS: right side
  • Ch: chain
  • St: stitch
  • Rnd: round
  • Join: join with a slip st into the first st
  • Slip st: slip stitch
  • Sc: single crochet
  • Dc: double crochet

Notes

  • To create the gauge: alternate sc and dc across a row of an even number of stitches. Continue with rows of alternating sc and dc across until you have a large enough swatch to measure.
  • This pattern is worked in 3 sections: the Cowl, the Cord, and the Pom Pom. The Cowl is worked in the round with a slip st into the first st, the Cord is woven through the ch sts created on the 3rd to last row of the Cowl, and the Pom Poms are added to the Cord.
  • The RS of the Cowl are the odd-numbered ends.
  • The ch-1 at the beginning of the rounds does not count as a stitch.
  • The multiple for this pattern is 10. If you’d like to make it larger or smaller, just make sure the stitch count is divisible by 10. Unless you’d like to leave the cord section out, then the multiple is just 2.
  • The sample was created using Felici Worsted in Cloudy With a Chance of Rainbows (approx 2 skeins) by Knit Picks/ We Crochet.

Approx finished product dimensions (measurements may vary by gauge and yarn used)

Example of the Kelsey Cowl and cord without pom poms

Pom Poms

Create 2 pom poms in your preferred method. You can also substitute these for tassels or pre-made pom poms. Do not attach Pom Poms to the Cord until you weave the Cord through the Cowl.

Assembly

With the right side facing you, arrange your Cowl so that the seam is going directly down the back. Insert one end of your Cord in a ch-2 space to the left of a “sc, dc, sc, dc” segment, pull the Cord back out in the next ch-2 space and continue weaving it back and forth through the ch-2 spaces until you get back to where you started. Attach 1 Pom Pom to each end of the Cord.
Weave in any remaining ends.
