Jewel’s Crochet Flower Blanket

Earlier this month I posted Jewel’s Flower Motif pattern. The motif came out so well that ideas for other items kept coming to me. Living in Michigan we always need lap blankets, and I can never have enough. So, I started making more of these oh-so-sweet flower motifs.

Once I had 7 made I joined them together and created a boarder around them that would mimic the petals to tie it all together. The result is a dimensional and graphic blanket that measures 37″ x 38.” I was quite surprised that having the single motif be designed for a child’s toy blanket for her cat; the panels all together have nothing childish about it. Don’t get me wrong, our kids and cats still love it – just so do the grown ups.

Our seven year old daughter loves this little blanket since she can put little objects in each of the flowers centers. Our 4 month old niece loves the color contrast, textures, and that she can easily grab onto something with it. I would love to have this as a bed cover for our bed. However, making the 45 motifs it would take to fit our queen sized bed may take me a while for me to be mentally ready to start such a project, and then a while for me to finish all of them.

I won’t lie, there were quite a few ends to weave in just with these panels. But, watching a movie and a glass of wine made it go painlessly. The one good thing about having larger motifs does mean you get fewer ends to weave in compared to some granny square projects.

I hope that this blanket pattern brings you as much happiness as it has to me and my family. Seeing all the panels come together is always a little magical to me, and it is very magical to me when I see our girls cuddle up with it and love using it so much.

Slip stitch in 3rd ch of the round’s beginning.

Bind off and weave in ends.

Optional:  weave petals’ ends into center flower’s side loops to secure them more.

Make 7 panels and block to measure 14” from corner to diagonal corner.  12 ½” from flat side to flat side.

Join motifs together with one panel in the center, and the six other panels surrounding it.  Use the center group of 2 double crochets from rnd 8 to mark where the seamed sections should start and end.

I used the zipper join method through the back loops to join the panels together.  To see how this is done click here to view our tutorial.

Edging:
With Color 2:  Rnd 1: With sl st on hook sc in one of the 1st stitches that is to the left of a panel join seam.  Sc in each stitch around and once in each seam. Sl St in the first stitch of the rnd.

Rnd 2: (read note at end of rnd)  Ch 2 and turn. Yarn over and insert hook into next stitch in row (the center stitch above a panel join).  Draw loop up through stitch. Yarn over and draw loop through two loops on hook. With 2 loops remaining on hook, yarn over and insert hook into next stitch in row.  Draw loop up through stitch. Yarn over and draw loop through two loops on hook. 3 loops remaining on hook. Yarn over and draw loop through all loops on hook. Dc once in the next 23 stitches.  Dc twice in the next 2 stitches. Dc once in the next 24 stitches. Dc twice in the next 2 stitches. Dc once in the next 23 stitches. *Dc3tog. Dc in next 23 stitches. Dc twice in next 2 stitches.  Dc in next 24 stitches. Dc twice in next 2 stitches. Dc in next 23 stitches.* Repeat around. Sl st in top of first decrease stitch.

(note:  this section sounds long and complicated.  If you follow your stitches from rnd 8 of each panel you won’t need to count.  In that rnd 8 you made groups with three stitches having 2 double crochets in each stitch, pay attention to the center group of 2 dc.  These two dc are at the points, and this is where you will be doing the 2 stitches with 2 dc in them. Dc to these stitches and you won’t have to count the 23 or 24 stitches.  Where the panels join is were you will dec3tog. The decrease will be made in the join stitch and the dc on each side of the join. Enjoy crocheting – for me repeatedly counting anything over 5 is not relaxing and enjoyable.)

Rnd 3:  Ch 1 and turn.  Sc in 1st st, ch 3, sc in the same stitch just worked in.  *Skip 1 stitch. Sc, ch 3, sc in same stitch just worked.* Repeat around and end with a sl st in the first sc of the rnd.

Bind off.

  1. This pattern is at the top of my list to make. It is absolutely beautiful ! You created a treasure for me. Thank you so very much for sharing !

    1. I have left it to where it can be folded up and down. I have blocked mine to where the edges roll down, and they stay nicely.

  2. What a unique idea!!! Love the cats in the pictures. I think I’m going to use this as a wall hanging. Thank you for posting such great patterns. Always excited to see what you’ll post next!
