Heart Shaped Nesting Baskets- Crochet Pattern

Heart Shaped Nesting Baskets- Crochet Pattern

Recently I posted a coaster pattern, the Little Heart Coaster. These Heart Shaped Nesting baskets build off of this coaster to make a super cute basket perfect for teachers, friends, or for decorating your own home. I used the traditional Valentine’s Day colors, white and red, but don’t let that stop you from making these in additional colors so they can be used at any time of year. I’m truly proud of how lovely these baskets look, and I hope you enjoy making them!

Let’s Get Started!

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Materials
    • 4.5 mm crochet hook (Size G)
    • Yarn needle/ darning needle
    • Lily Sugar’n Cream yarn- 1 ball white, 1 ball red. The “Super Size” balls will make two sets of these baskets.
  • Stitches used: chain, single crochet, slip stitch, single crochet decreasing and increasing
  • Other Techniques: color changing
  • Abbreviations:
    • ch- chain
    • sc- single crochet
    • sc2tog- single crochet two together (insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop. insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. Now there is one stitch where there were two!)
    • sl st- slip stitch
    • st- stitch
  • Approximate final dimensions:
    • Basket 1 (white): 3 inches wide, 2 inches tall
    • Basket 2 (red): 3.5 inches wide, 2.5 inches tall
    • Basket 3 (striped): 4 inches wide, 3 inches tall

Tips Before Starting:

Leave a longer tail/ end when starting this project to have extra for detailing. Do not turn your work when completing the base of the basket. There will be a very clear “right side” and “wrong side”. There are helpful hints along the way: make sure the 3 sc for the tip of the heart line up. Also, please note that all final stitch counts include the slip stitch that joins the rows.

If you are a visual person, there are additional photos showing construction of the base here.

If you are uncomfortable with color changing/ making stripes on Basket #3, please check out the following video by Crochet Guru.
