Happy Hexagon Crochet Tote Bag Pattern

Well hello there beautiful!  I’m loving the fall vibe and stunning combination of a variegated and solid yarn in this fun make! The Happy Hexagon Crochet Tote Bag is sure to make you… well.. happy!

I blame it on the 70’s era.  When I was a child, burnt orange, olive and mustard yellow colors were such a thing.  And then they left.. as in exited the building never to return again.

I’m sad to say, I spent a very long time in life avoiding the color orange. It seemed outdated. Decidedly not fun.  And its not like it mattered because you couldn’t find orange yarn anywhere for a number of years.

But now.. oh how I love the autumn colors!  I love my crochet pumpkin like nobody’s business. And my Fabulous Fall Crochet Wreath just speaks to my soul. And this delightful hexagon crochet tote bag makes me all kinds of happy.  It’s two colors of yarn, people.  I know.  That middle bit?  Yup.. a delicious variegated yarn.

I don’t know why, but I love a good variegated yarn.  And it makes me extra happy when I find a coordinating color to go along with it.  Like I’ve ticked boxes off some immensely satisfying checklist.  Done and done.  So when I found these two fall beauties, I knew exactly the project:  A crochet hexagon tote!  Perfect for carrying a small project!

Let’s dive in:

Happy Hexagon Crochet Tote Bag

Here is what you will need:

• US G/6 4.00mm (here are my favorite crochet hooks)
• 4 oz Worsted Weight Variegated Yarn (Sample used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Autumn Stripe color)
• 3.25 oz Worsted Weight Solid Color Yarn (Sample used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Terra Cotta color)
• Tapestry needle and scissors

Hexagon Crochet Tote Bag Size:

The finished crochet tote measures approximately 11.5″ wide x 18.5″ tall (including handles).  Each hexagon is approximately 5.5″ when measured side to side (flat side to opposing flat side)

Special Crochet Cluster Stitches:

This project uses cluster stitches that are worked similarly.  A basic Cluster Stitch Tutorial Follows the stitch descriptions.

2dcc (2 double crochet cluster):  *yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook*.  Repeat from * to * once.  There are now 3 loops on hook.  Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

3dcc (3 double crochet cluster):  *yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook*.  Repeat from * to * two more times.  There are now 4 loops on hook.  Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

4dcc (4 double crochet cluster):  *yarn over, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through first 2 loops on hook*.  Repeat from * to * three more times.  There are now 5 loops on hook.  Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

How to make a 3 Double Crochet Cluster Stitch:

To begin, yarn over, insert hook in stitch.  Then yarn over and pull through a stitch.  There are 2 loops on hook. You’ve partially made a double crochet.  Now you’re going to make a few more partial double crochet stitches.

Repeat the first step two more times.  There are now 4 loops on the hook.

Yarn over and pull through all the loops on the hook.

This is what the finished cluster looks like:

At the completion of the cluster, it is usually ‘locked in’ by a chain or two (read the pattern directions for this step).  This is how the stitch looks after the lock in chain.

The other cluster stitches are worked similarly, just with more or less partial double crochets before the final step.  Let’s get started with the crochet hexagons for this cute crochet hexagon tote bag!

Crochet Hexagons (Make 10):

With variegated yarn, chain 5 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

R1:  Ch 1 and work 12 sc in the ring.  Sl st to first sc to join (12 sc)

R2:  Ch 2 (2dcc, ch 1) in first sc, (3dcc, ch 1) in each st around.  Sl st to top of starting ch2 to join.  (12 clusters)

R3:  Ch 2 (3dcc, ch 2) in the first ch-1 space, (4dcc, ch 2) in each remaining ch-1 space around. Sl st to top of starting ch2 to join. (12 clusters)

R4:  Ch 3 (3 dc, ch 1) in first ch-2 space, (4dc, ch 1) in each remaining ch-2 spaces. Sl st to top of starting ch3 to join. (48 dc)

R5:  Slip stitch to next space, ch 3 (counts as dc), (2dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same space, *3dc in next space, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) in next space.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting ch 3. Fasten off variegated yarn. (54 dc)

R6: With contrasting yarn color, join with a slip stitch in any corner space.  Ch 2 (does NOT count as a hdc), *(hdc, ch 1, hdc) in corner, hdc in next 9 st.  Repeat from * around.  Join with a slip stitch at the top of the first hdc in row.  Fasten off and weave in ends. (72 hdc)

Join Crochet Hexagons:

Next join the hexagons with the Zig Zag Slip Stitch Join.  You can find a complete tutorial for the Zig Zag Slip Stitch Join here.

After you join the hexagons, following the diagram below, flip the bottom up and join the remaining hexagons to form a bag shape.  When looking at the join photo or diagram the top 2 hexagons are the top of the bag on one side, where one handle will attach.  

The bottom 2 hexagons become the top on the opposite side of the bag where the opposite handle will attach.  The other hexagons fold inward to meet the middle square.  Follow the arrows to attach the sides properly.

The border and handles are worked very similarly to the border and handle on the Sunflower Bag.  Just follow the instructions for the straps and border on this pattern here.
