Crochet bear hats are so cute don’t you think ? This free crochet pattern combines texture and color for a classic look your whole family will love! Inspired by the winter woodlands, this hat is just as warm as it is stylish (those bear ears=true love). The thick texture and softness of Red Heart With Love guarantees this hat’s coziness and durability throughout the coldest months of the year. If you follow me you know how much I love texture! I’ve combined the Seed Stitch, Waistcoat Stitch (also called the Crochet Stockinette Stitch), and the Star (or Marguerite) Stitch into this hat design. If you’ve never done the Star Stitch or Waistcoat stitch I’ve linked short tutorial videos below that should help you get the hang of them. They are both easy to pick up and I’m confident you’ll be zipping through this pattern in no time. The bear ears are double layered for stiffness and are solid brown on the back. The front of the ear cups slightly giving a 3D look. If ears aren’t your thing you can always leave them off and work this hat as a beanie.

Stitches Used:
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
Additional Terms:
Star stitch: this stitch is described in the pattern itself. Here is a short video showing how to work the Star Stitch:
Waistcoat stitch: work a regular single crochet in the center of the post of the stitch instead of through the front and back loops as you normally would.
Here is a video showing how to work the Waistcoat stitch:
Gauge:
4” across after round 5. 14 sc in 4”
Measurements:
9-12 mos: 8 1/2” wide by 6” tall
Toddler: 9” wide by 6 1/2” tall
Child: 9 3/4” wide by 7” tall
Adult: 10 1/2” wide by 7 1/2” tall
Additional Notes:
-For the Star Stitch: Except for the first star in the round, when making the first part of the star stitch, the loop on your hook is counted as the first loop out of 6. You will only draw up 5 loops.
– It may be possible to make a 6 month size by going down a hook size and following the 9-12 months pattern. You may also need to omit a round of the Waistcoat Stitch so the hat doesn’t get too long.
-Spot something familiar about this design? The top of this pattern uses the same stitch pattern as the Simple Seed Stitch Beanie, but calls for a smaller hook.

Crochet Bear Ears Pattern (All Sizes):
The ears are worked in continuous, unjoined rounds. A stitch marker will help you keep track of your stitch counts.
Directions: make 2 circles in “Lettuce”, and then start your first “Chocolate” circle. Jump down to the “Finishing” section before cutting the chocolate yarn and continue working that section. Repeat one more time for the other “Chocolate” circle.
3.25mm hook for 9-12 mos, toddler size

Round 3: 2 sc in first st, sc in next st *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around, sl st into next 2 sts after completing the round. (18)
Cut “Lettuce” yarn and weave in ends.
Finishing (repeat twice using “Chocolate” yarn):
Round 1: Place one “Chocolate” and one “Lettuce” circle back to back so the front sides are facing out, then sc in each st around them with the “Chocolate” yarn to join the circles. (18)
Round 2: sc around, omitting the last 2 sts. (16)
Fasten off leaving 12” tail for sewing ears to hat.
Sew ears to hat placing the flatter space at the bottom of the ear where you skipped the last 2 sts directly against the hat. Make sure the ears are both facing the same direction.
