Are you a new or beginner crocheter? Just learning a basic stitches such as, chain, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. Mastered how to make a square, coaster, dishcloth and so on. But yet to ready or dare not to start on any clothing/garment projects? Worry about sizes, measuring & shaping?

No! Let have fun with the very basic granny squares. If you can make a granny square you can make a lots of them, join them together to many many possibility items beside just a blanket.

Granny Square Top

Let start with this easy summer top. You will need 22 full squares, 4 shaping squares and 4 half squares. No, don’t panic with the shaping square. You will build the shape as you change the row/colour.

You don’t have to follow my colour arrangement. You can play around with what ever colours of yarn that you have left over. Mixed and matched them. It will be turned out the only one top in the world, unique!

When I start with this project, I did not think about the sizes I wanted to make. It just coincidently turn out to fit me. My clothing sizes for your reference, I’m normally wearing sizes US = XS or S, UK = 6 or 8.

If you don’t like the mess of mathematic, but you want to make the sizes smaller or bigger, just go down or go up the hook sizes. A square width X 4 = the width of the top. For example, if your square turn out 10cm x 10cm. 10 x 4squares = 40cm, which mean it can be fit up to 80cm bust. And, if you wish it to be longer, just add extra rows of squares. Easy? Let get started ;

Hi there. My 12 year old niece wants a granny square dress. The one she’s seen is not available as a patter. But this top is similar in style. Could I just lengthen by adding more rows of granny squares please? I’m a newbie so has to be fairly easy. Thanks

Hi Laura, yes you can adding rows to lengthen as a dress. But by just adding row it will become straight/shift dress. So I suggest you follow the top pattern. And then make the bottom separate with the width bigger then the top. Say maybe make a total of 12 granny squares or more by 4 or 5 rows of granny square depend one the length you want. Then you join the top and bottom together at the waist line by overlapping the bottom by decreasing the bottom to match the top. In this way you will get draped/ruffled bottom.
Hope this help.

Hello! is the 2dctog a cluster stitch? I can’t imagine that it would be a decrease. Thank you for your reply in advance.

I am confused at how to join the squares. I could do with a video. Can’t work out how to do it. Don’t know which way round and where to start 🤔 If squares need to be front or back facing 🤔 Totally lost ☹️

Sorry no video. Only chart as guide for where to join with slst. I do it side by side by pick up front and back loop for the slst. If this direction confusing you, place the square back to back when joining. Working square with the right side facing you, joining square with the wrong side place below the working square. I hope this help.
