Hi everyone! Today we will crochet this beautiful granny square jacket. I’ve just finished the written instructions but I crocheted it last spring. I was wearing the jacket last year and I’m happy to share the pattern with you.

MATERIALS:
YARN: any 8/8 cotton yarn – 9 skeins (450 grams) – main color, 2-3 skeins (100-150 grams) – colorful yarn
CROCHET HOOK: #5
SIZE: S/M (crochet more squares for a bigger size) the square – 10×10 cm (4×4 in), width – 45 cm(17 1/2 in), length- 46 cm(18 in), sleeves – 45 cm (17 1/2 in)
STITCHES USED: ch-chain, sl st-slip stitch, sc-single crochet, dc-double crochet
PATTERN:
You’ll need 20 blue squares, 12 colorful squares, 2 colorful half squares to crochet this jacket.
SQUARE
Round 1: make a magic circle, ch-3, 2 dc into the circle, ch-2, * 3 dc into the circle, ch-2 **, repeat twice, pull the yarn, join with sl st to top of ch-3
Round 2: sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space **, repeat twice, join with sl st to top of ch-3
Round 3: sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, 3 dc in the space between 2 corners, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, 3 dc in the space between 2 corners **, repeat twice, join with sl st to top of ch-3
Round 4: sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, 3 dc in next 2 spaces between 2 corners, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, 3 dc in next 2 spaces between 2 corners, **, repeat twice, join with sl st to top of ch-3
JOINING
I will show you how to connect the 3 corners of the square. Start joining the squares while you are crocheting the 4th round:
Crochet one corner and one side of the square, 3 dc in the 2nd corner of the unfinished square, ch-1, sc in the 1st corner of the upper square, ch-1, 3 dc in the 2nd corner of the unfinished square,
sc in next space of the upper square, (3 dc in next space of the unfinished square, sc in next space of the upper square) rep once, 3 dc in the 3rd corner of the unfinished square, sc in the 2nd corner of the upper square, sc in the 1st corner of the left square, 3 dc in the 3rd corner of the unfinished square,
sc in next space of the left square, (3 dc in next space of the unfinished square, sc in next space of the left square) rep once, 3 dc in the 4th corner of the unfinished square, sc in the 2nd corner of the left square, ch-1, 3 dc in the 4th corner of the unfinished square, 3 dc in next 2 spaces of the unfinished square, join with sl st to top of ch-3
Join together 20 blue squares this way: width – 5 squares, height – 4 squares. After that start connecting colorful squares as you can see here:

When you finish it start crocheting a half granny square
HALF SQUARES (2 pieces)
Half squares – crochet the 1st row of the pattern, then, make just three corners of the 2 row.
The 3rd row of the 1st half square crochet this way: connect the thread to the lower-left corner, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, 3 dc in next space between 2 corners, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, 3 dc in next space between 2 corners, 3 dc in the last corner, cut the thread. The second square crochet in the same way.
Connect them to the cardi.
SLEEVES
Connect the yarn to any space and start crocheting a granny stitch:
Round 1: ch-3, 2 dc in same space, 3 dc in each space around, join with sl st to top of ch-3 (19 granny stitches)
Round 2: sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next space, ch-3, 2 dc in same space, 3 dc in each space around, join with sl st to top of ch-3
Repeat Round 2 until you reach 19 rounds
Round 20: sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next space, ch-3, 2 dc in same space, 3 dc in next space, * 2 dc in next 2 spaces, 3 dc in next 2 spaces **, repeat from * to ** to the end of the round, join with sl st to top of ch-3
Round 21: sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next space, ch-3, 2 dc in same space, 3 dc in next space, * skip next space, 3 dc in next 3 spaces **, repeat from * to ** to the end of the round, join with sl st to top of ch-3
Round 22-29: rep Round 2
Round 30: rep Round 20
Round 31: rep Round 21
Round 32-35: rep Round 2
Round 36: rep Round 20
Round 37: rep Round 21
Round 38-39: rep Round 2
I get 3 decreasing rounds. The last round crochet this way:
Round 40: sl st in next 2 dc, * sc in next space, 5 dc in next space ** repeat from * to ** to the end of the round, join with sl st to the 1st sc
Make 4 rows of granny stitches around the jacket.
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for sharing this lovely sweater! Your instructions are so clear <3 Since Valentines' is coming up, am going to make mine with Heart Granny Squares for the full ones, but for the half squares will make those as one colour. Thank you for the pattern and the inspiration!

What is a size 5 crochet hook? Are you talking about #5 steel? That seems pretty small for size 8 yarn . . .

I love this sweater and just started making it. I have a question about sizing. Your picture looks like 4 squares across the back but your diagram of the squares has 5 across. I’m not sure how many are needed for size small. Can you please clarify this? Thanks
You will need 4. But it would be better to count how many “your granny squares” you need for your size. Measure the width of your shoulders and crochet squares according to your measurement.
What is 8/8 cotton equivalent to in weight ? A 4 worsted weight or a DK weight ?
