Free Florence Hexagon Blanket Crochet Pattern

Did you know it took me years to become a person who likes to make blankets? I don’t know what it was exactly that made me dislike them, maybe it was how much work they take, but I honestly would tell people ” I don’t make big projects” for so, so long. But, let me tell you, that is not the case any more. I have so many blankets I’ve been making in the last couple years and this week I’ve even got a new pattern for one – say hello to the Florence Hexagon Blanket crochet pattern!

Hexagons are the bestagons, ya know? And I do love how they work up to create such a fun and exciting blanket and that’s why I picked them for this one. I mean, I could have picked squares or triangles or even circles if I was feeling cheeky but nope, I picked one of my favorites – hexagons, to base this entire blanket around. And I also knew I wanted some 3D texture, which is super easy to achieve when you work into both the front and back loop separately (making 2 passes for a few different rnds, don’t worry that’ll make sense in the pattern). I just had this image for the flower center of a hexagon design and I knew I had to make it happen.

So why Florence? Because in my head… it made sense. I liked the idea of Florence to flora, which means plants and the center of this design is a flower. And why mustard? Because this whole thing has a secret bee theme. Do you see it? The hexagons, the flowers, & the warm mustard color? Yep… an idea that possibly only I would understand but that’s ok, because it does make me smile. Also I love this color, it really is so very pretty in person. I even have some left over… I’m thinking about making another design with it but that’s future Amber’s problem.

Anyway, I do hope you like the new Florence Hexagon Blanket crochet pattern and I seriously hope that it cools down here so I can pull it out and use it. Is it Fall where you are yet? Are you able to crochet and not feel too warm? If you are, I’m jealous. Please send some of that cool air my way.

Florence Hexagon Blanket Crochet Pattern Instructions

Hexagon (make 59)
(RS) Rnd 1: Create a magic circle (you can also replace this with a ch 1 if you prefer), ch 1, hdc 12 times into the circle, join — 12 hdc
Note: the next rnd (as well as rnds 3 and 4) you will work in 2 parts – Rnd 2A will be worked back loop only of the previous row and Rnd 2B will be worked in the remaining loop. This is what creates the 3D design and texture.
Rnd 2A, BLO the whole row: Ch 1, turn: sc into the first st, *ch 2, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * all the way around, join — 12 sc
Rnd 2B, the remaining loop: Ch 1, turn, slip st into the BLO, ch 1, hdc into the first st, hdc twice into the next st, *hdc into the next st, hdc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * all the way around, join — 18 hdc
Rnd 3A, BLO the whole row: Ch 1, turn, sc into the first st, *ch 2, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * all the way around, join — 18 sc
Rnd 3B, the remaining loop: Ch 1, turn, hdc into the first 2 sts, hdc twice into the next st, *hdc into the next 2 sts, hdc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * all the way around, join — 24 hdc
Rnd 4A, BLO the whole row: Ch 1, turn, sc into the first st, *ch 2, sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * all the way around, join — 24 sc

The BLO portion ends here. The rnds 5 – 11 end will be worked into both loops.

Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block your Half-Hexagon.

Seaming
Arrange the Hexagons in a 7, 6, 7, 6, 7, 6, 7, 6, 7 arrangement, and then insert the Half-Hexagons in the edges of the 6 Hexagon rows to give a solid edge on that side. Seam together the Hexagons and Half-Hexagons in your preferred method of seaming (I used a whip stitch throughout).

Border
Start in a corner ch-2 so that you’re working along the straight edge (where you attached the Half-Hexagons), |sc down the edge placing one sc into each sc, one sc into each ch-2 space, and 2 sc into each hdc until you get to the last ch-2 space at the corner, rotate your blanket so you’re working along the point ends of the hexagons, sc once into the first ch-2, sc once into each sc until the next ch 2, *[sc, ch 3, sc], sc once into each sc until the next ch-2,* repeat from * to * until the last ch-2 of the row, | rotate your piece so you’re working along the straight edge, repeat from | to | until you’re back to the first st, join — 1,092 sc, 14 ch-3 spaces
Fasten off, weave in your ends and block if you’d like.

Tassels
Cut approx 406 12” pieces of yarn, separate them into piles of 29. Loop the piles through the ch-3 spaces on the Hexagons on the short side. Then cut 14 more 8” pieces of yarn and tie them (at least a few times before fastening off) approx 1” from the fold point around the ch-3. Do this for each of the remaining 13 ch-3 spaces on the end Hexagons.
