Easy Peasy Summer Top

Easy Crochet Top Pattern by KnitcroAddict

Hello everyone, hope you are all enjoying your summer. I’m so happy to be back on Underground Crafter with another free pattern for you all. If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you won’t be surprised to find that it’s a crochet summer top pattern. The more the merrier I say!

It’s a very easy 2-panel project, made with very basic stitches. It’s mostly HDC, which is simple enough that even if you never crocheted before, you could learn it in 5 mins and attempt this top.

I used a bigger hook size than usual, so this summer top works up quick, and also has a little more rustic look to the stitches. It also makes it incredibly breezy and airy.

If you have never made a crochet summer top before, this is the one to make your first attempt. It really is easy peasy.

Materials

  • #3 light/DK weight yarn
  • I used Patons Hempster ( Color Spice ) #3 Light/DK weight yarn
  • Crochet hook size 5 mm
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker

Stitches Used & Code

  • ch = chain
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • REP = repeat
  • RS = right side
  • sk = skip
  • st = stitch(es)
  • tr = treble crochet ( Yarn over hook 2 times, video tutorial available here)
  • WS = wrong side
  • ” = inches

Notes

  • This crochet pattern is made as US women’s sizes XS (S, M, L, XL, XXL )
  • This top is made in 2 separate pieces and then sewn together (2 panels are made the same)
  • In this picture I have demonstrated with size small

  • Row 3 – Row 31 ( 33, 35, 37, 39, 41 ) : REP Row 2
  • Row 32 ( 34, 36, 38, 40, 42 ) : Turn, ch 4 ( count as 1 tr ), 1 tr into each of next 12 ( 15, 18, 20, 23, 26 ) st, cut the yarn and leave about an 8-12″ (20.5-30.5 cm) long tail, sk 24 ( 24, 24, 26, 26, 26 ) st, add new yarn into next st then, ch 4 ( count as 1 tr ), 1 tr into next st and each st across, cut the yarn and leave about an 8-12″ (20.5-30.5 cm) long tail
  • *While the front and back panels are made the same, you only need to leave the tails on one panel.

Sew the Front and Back Panels Together

Sew the shoulders together

  • Place your panels right side facing down, we’ll sew in the wrong side. Using the tail that we left earlier. Sew 13 ( 16, 19, 21, 24, 27 ) tr of the front and back panel together at the shoulder seam. Use which ever method you prefer to sew.

Sew the sides together

  • Fold your top in half at the shoulder seams with the right side facing each other, we’ll sew on the wrong side. Cut a new strand of yarn 20-30 inches (51-76 cm) long, enough to sew the side seams up to the arm pit. Sew 15 ( 17, 17, 19, 19, 21 ) rows of the front and back panels together at the side seam. Start sewing from the bottom up, using method of choice
  • *If you want smaller arm holes, just sew more st. If you want bigger arm holes, just sew less st.

  1. Make sure and measure your first row… I didn’t and didn’t realize until much later that 69 chains (size large) did not measure 22.66 inches for me… not really sure why but it wound up being too small so have to remake. It’s okay though… learning experience (measure before you get too involved) and this top is so cute that I don’t mind starting again. Beginner mistake.

  2. I love your videos! You do such excellent work. I’m 78 years old and just learned a little bit about crochet. I’m hoping my top looks half as good as yours. I’ll make it a little longer.
    Thank you again!

  3. This was an easy make. I made my longer by about 9 rows in each panel and then I added a row of triples on the bottom to match the shoulders and a row of triples on the sleeves to make them a bit longer. It came out really cute. Thank you.

  4. Really clear instructions, but, yes, check gauge! I made the medium and it’s too wide and not long enough, It measures more than the stated width for a medium and the 35 rows did not measure the length. But I’m sure I’ll get round it!
Thanks for all your lovely designs.
