Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Järbo 8/4 100% Cotton “Mercerized & Gassed” 50 g Colors: offwhite and frosty green.
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The size my bag is 8.0 x 12.0 cm.

This pattern uses the iris stitch. The photo instructions show how to make this stitch step-by-step, as well as how to change yarn color and how to make a string.

You will work in rounds. It is easy to adjust the size of the bag: start by chaining multiples of four until you will reach the desired width of the bag. Follow the pattern until your reach the height of the bag where you would like to weave in the string, then change yarn color. Keep working in the same way until you reach the desired height of the bag.

Pattern

The bag

Start by chaining 24 with offwhite yarn.

Round 1: To make the first round, you will work down the chain, then turn and work in the other side of the chain. Make sc in every st of the chain starting from the second chain from your hook. Turn. 1 sc in the end of the chain, make sc in every st (starting with the one you have just worked into; now that st has 3 sc in total) until you come back to the beginning of the chain. 1 sc in the end of the chain. In total you should have 48 st. Join with a sl st to the first sc of this round.

Round 2: ch 3 (it counts as a dc), dc in the first st, ch 1, 2 dc in the same st. *Skip 3 st, then in the fourth stitch make: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc.*, rep ** until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the ch3 that you made in the beginning of this round.

Round 3: Sl st in the first st, sl st in the ch1 space of the prev round. Ch 3 (it counts as a dc), dc in the ch1 space, ch 1, 2 dc in the same ch1 space. *Work in the next ch1 space of the prev roun: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc*, rep ** until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the ch3 that you made in the beginning of this round.

Round 4-13: repeat round 3.

Round 14: Sl st in the first st, sl st in the ch1 space of the prev round. Take your green yarn and ch 1. Pull the end of the offwhite yarn to tighten up. Then work with the green yarn as usually until the end of the pattern.

Round 15-19: repeat round 3.

Fasten off.

Making the string

Start by chaining with green yarn. The length of the chain should be around 30 cm long. Make a row of slip stitches in the third loop of the chain (see the tutorial here). When you reach the end of the row, fasten off. You are ready to weave in the string into your bag. Done!
