My sister is moving away for school! Since every new home deserves a plant, I decided to crochet her a cactus. She actually had a real cactus before, but it died! So my sister gave me the pot it was in to make a new cactus (that hopefully will never die!)

Isn’t the pot adorable? The pot is 8cm in diameter and 4cm deep. It has pictures of cactus, cowboys, and mountains all around it.

Materials:

- 4.0mm and 3.5mm hook. Only the flowers are made on a 3.5mm hk, everything else is made on the 4.0mm hook

- medium weight yarn in light brown, green, pink/red, and yellow (I used Loops and Threads Impeccable in Soft Taupe, Fern, Arbor Rose, and Butterscotch

Base/Soil: done in continuous rounds

In light brown

1) ch 2, 6sc in the first ch. (6)

2) inc around (12)

3) *inc, 1sc* around (18)

4) *inc, 2sc* around (24)

5) *inc, 3sc* around (30)

6) *inc, 4sc* around (36)

7) *inc, 5sc* around (42)

Rounds 8-14) 1sc in each stitch (42). Fasten off and weave in the end

Cactus: done in rows

In green

1) ch 21. Starting in the second ch from the hook, 1hdc in each ch (20)

Rows 2-22) In the back loops only, 1hdc in each stitch (20) Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing

Flower: on a 3.5mm hook, make 3

In pink/red

1) ch 4. Sl st to the first ch

2) *ch 2, 1treble, st st* x5 into the middle of the circle (not the chains). Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. The center of the flower is made by taking a strand of yellow yarn and tying 2 knots. Put the knot through the middle of the flower to secure it in place.

The base that I made fit perfectly into the pot. I wanted the base to be a little higher than the pot. I left the base unstuffed.

The fun part is stuffing the cacti. I cinched both ends the same way I made my PUMPKIN, please check out that post to find out HOW TO CINCH IT. Overlap the 2 ends to make a long cylinder shape. Then with a long strand of green yarn, sew through the top stitches, pulling tightly as you work, closing the hole. Do this on both ends, and stuff the cactus while you work.

Sew the cactus onto the base. I was originally going to leave the cactus like this, but my sister suggested to add flowers. Her real cactus plant had a few flowers on the top!

image

I sewed all 3 flowers on the top of the cactus. I think they made the cactus a lot more colourful!

I love how crocheting into the back loops makes a ribbed effect! It gives the cactus a lot more texture, just like the real ones! But this one is safe to touch and hug!

Happy crocheting!
