Free Crochet Top Pattern – Chasing Diamonds Tunic

The Free Crochet Top Pattern – Chasing Diamonds Tunic is the very first pattern I ever published, so it has a soft spot in my heart. I just love the design. The stitch pattern looks complicated, but it is actually very easy. And the three rows of diamonds give the top a beautiful and elegant style.

How To Crochet Free Crochet Top Pattern – Chasing Diamonds Tunic

Gauge Swatch

1. FDC 21. (or Ch 23, Dc in 4th ch and each ch across. ) Turn.

2. Ch3 (counts as dc), sk next dc, [sh, sk 2 dc] 6 times. Sk 2 dc, 2dc in last dc

3.-12. Ch3 (counts as dc), Sh in next 6 spaces, 2dc in last dc. Measure the 6 Sh only and it should equal 4” across. Next, measure the 10 rows of Sh only and it should equal 4” high. If not, then change your hook size to compensate. Everyone’s tension is different.

Instructions

I started this pattern with the FDC because I prefer the look and behavior of this stitch as opposed to beginning with ch and dc. Having said this, if you prefer to use ch and dc that will be fine as well. I provided instructions on how to do that as well.

I have provided many pictures to help you visualize how the rows should look, however these pictures are only of one size (L) and should not be used as reference for stitch counts.

You should now have one complete row of diamonds.

From here you will keep building more rows of diamonds. Be sure to pay attention to your tension. Sometimes when I’m making a lot of chains, I find my stitches can become tighter.

You should now have seven rows of diamonds, plus 5 rows. You will now carry on to the instructions for your chosen size.

Note for petites: If you are on the short side, then you may want to leave out one row of diamonds to make your top a bit shorter.

Finishing:

Once you have made the back and front, you will sew them together at the shoulders and sides.

For the shoulders, hold the front and back with right sides together and whip stitch together the outer 14 (17, 20, 23, 26, 29) sc at the top on either side.

For the sides, whip stitch together rows 7. – 45.

Join yarn in one bottom slit with right side facing you and sc evenly around bottom slit. Fasten off. Repeat for other bottom slit.

Join yarn in armpit of one sleeve with right side facing you. Sc evenly around entire sleeve. Sl St to 1st sc to join. Ch3, dc in next sc, dc in each sc around. Sl st in top of ch3 to join. Fasten off.

Join yarn in one side of neck near shoulder with right side facing you. Sc evenly around. Sl st in 1st sc to join. Fasten off.

Weave in all your ends.  And you’re done! I would suggest washing and blocking your project as I find the stitches settle into place better when I do that.
