Knitting pattern: CAPUCINE

I´m a beginning knitter and this is my first pattern made for public. If you find any mistakes or inconsistency, please leave me a notice.

Size:
approx 54 - 56 cm in circumference

Used gauge:
64 stitches on 5 mm needles ~ 52 cm (unstretched)

Difficulty:
Easy peasy

Abbreviations:
k - knit
p - purl
k2tog - knit 2 together
* - repeat to the end of the row

THE PATTERN:

Cast on 82 stitches. First make the ribbed hem (on straight or circular needles, doesn´t matter so far) :

Row 1: (k2, p2)* (turn)
Row 2: (p2, k2)* (turn)
repeat Row 1&2 three more times (Row 3 - 8) => approx 5 cm of ribbed hem

Then make the garter stitch section. Decrease:

Row 9: k82 (turn)
Row 10: k82 (turn)

Row 11: k1, k2tog, k1, k2 tog, k70, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1 (turn) => i.e. decrease 2 on each side; 78 stitches remain
Row 12: k78

Row 13: k1, k2tog, k1, k2 tog, k66, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1 (turn) => i.e. decrease 2 on each side; 74 stitches remain
Row 14: k74

Row 15: k1, k2tog, k1, k2 tog, k62, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1 (turn) => i.e. decrease 2 on each side; 70 stitches remain
Row 16: k70

Row 17: k1, k2tog, k1, k2 tog, k58, k2tog, k1, k2tog, k1 (turn) => i.e. decrease 2 on each side; 66 stitches remain
Row 18: k66

Row 19: k1, k2tog, k60, k2tog, k1 (turn) => i.e. decrease 1 on each side; 64 stitches remain
Row 20: k64

Row 21 - 30: k64

The hem + garter stitch section should be just about 13 cm. If it is less, knit some more rows.

Transfer to circular needles and JOIN IN ROUND.

Round 1 - 8 (=Row 31 - 38): k64 (~4 cm)

Shape the crown:

Round 9: (k6, k2 tog)* => 56 stitches left
Round 10: k56

Round 11: (k5, k2tog)* => 48 stitches left
Round 12: k48

Round 13: (k4, k2tog)* => 40 stitches left
Round 14: k40

Round 15: (k3, k2tog)* => 32 stitches left
Round 16: k32

Round 17: (k2, k2tog)* => 24 stitches left
Round 18: k24

Round 19: (k1, k2tog)* => 16 stitches left
Round 20: k16

Round 21: (k2tog)* => 8 stitches left

Cut yarn leaving a 15 cm tail. Thread tail onto a tapestry needle and pull through remaining stitches. Fasten the top, weave the ends, attach tassels, sew on some felt birds and voila!

This pattern is for personal use only. Thank you.

Byl-li by zájem o návod i v češtině, sepíšu ho někdy po novém roce.

There are some very nice videos on making tassels on youtube. Like this one by makeitminemag.

  2. This hat is gorgeous! I recently bought a spinning wheel and spun some bulky yarn with it. My mom said she needed a hat so when I found this pattern I knew I had to make it with my newly spun yarn. It's not finished yet but soon!

    poxacuatl: I would suggest bulky or super bulky yarn.

  15. Someone is selling this on Etsy and doesn't seem to be giving you credit.

    Just wanted to make sure you knew about that.

  16. do you have a recommended size needle I should use?

    OdpovědětVymazat
  17. Elle: It is a yarn which they sell in my LYS in Brno, Czech Republic. :-) They even make it there. They take several strands of different yarns and wind them together to one skein.

    Andrea: Thank you. I didn´t know. Well, there will always be people who don´t give you credit for something you came up with. I must confess it doesn´t really matter to me as I don´t do it for living, just for fun.

    Beedria: I would use any needle size that would be suitable for my yarn. And recounted the number of stitches so it would give me the gauge.

  19. How many different types of yarn did you use the tassels look like several different types or is the bulky yarn pulled apart?

    OdpovědětVymazat
  20. Hi holla! Usually 3-4 strands of different yarn together. I don´t mix them myself, they sell these mixes in my LYS. It looks like this:

  25. Thank you for this wonderful free pattern! I started knitting it yesterday and surprisingly I am starting the crown decreases now. I am using it to test a new worsted yarn base for my Etsy shop. If I wanted to sell hats made using this pattern, how do I pay you for copyright?

    OdpovědětVymazat
  26. I have been making this hat for all the young women in my life, but I would also like to sell some at a local craft show. May I pay you for copyrights and do this. I will include a page with each hat directing buyers to your blog. Thanks~

  27. Hi all, I get requests for cottage licenses quite often. I decided to let this hat live its own life. Feel free to knit as many hats for sale as you wish. For charity purposes or any other purposes. I don´t demand any financial compensation. Please just give me a credit as to the designer if possible. Thanks. ;)

  32. I just made this hat using the new instructions on ravelry.com. I used bulky yarn and followed the instructions for bulky yarn. It made the hat waaaay too big :( I'm going to try again with a regular yarn using this pattern posted on your blog. Hopefully, this time it will come out looking as cute as yours ;) Thanks for the pattern!
