Breton Ruffle Cuff Sweater

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate

This crochet pattern is written for size small with changes for medium, large, and X-large in parentheses.

MATERIALS:

Hook: 7/4.5mm, H-8/5mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Yarn: Berroco Pima 100 (219 yards) worsted weight yarn –  3 (3, 4, 4) skeins Wisteria, 2 skeins Black Eyed Susan, 2 (2, 3, 3) skeins Empire

Tools: Scissors, tapestry needle

ABBREVIATIONS:

st = stitch

hdc = half double crochet

ch = chain

sl st = slip stitch

sc= single crochet

dc= double crochet

dc2tog= double crochet 2 together, decreasing st

SPECIAL INFORMATION: 17 dc x 8 rows = 4” with larger hook

FINISHED SIZE: 36 (40.5, 44, 48)” bust, 23 (23, 24, 24)” long

PATTERN:

Front Panel:

With empire and larger hook, ch 77 (87, 95, 103).

Row 1: Dc into the 2nd ch from the hook and each st across, turn. 76 (86, 94, 102) sts

Rows 2-6: Ch 2 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 7: With black, repeat row 2.

Rows 8&9: With empire, repeat row 2.

Row 10: With black, repeat row 2.

Rows 11&12 : With wisteria, repeat row 2.

Rows 13-30: Repeat row 2, alternating 1 row of black with 2 rows of wisteria

Rows 31-35 (31-35, 31-37, 31-37): With wisteria, repeat row 2.

Neck and Shoulder Shaping

Place st marker in the center of work.

Row 1: Ch 2, dc to 1 st before marker. Sc into st before the marker. Turn, leaving remaining sts unworked. 38 (43, 47, 51) sts

Row 2: Skip first sc, Loosely sc into 1st dc of the previous row. Dc2tog, dc in each st to end, turn. 2 sts decreased

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in each st across to last 3 sts, dc2tog, sc in the sc, turn. 1 st decreased

Row 4-11: Repeat rows 2 and 3. 23 (28, 32, 36) sts at end of last row

Fasten off. Join yarn at opposite edge on last row of body, repeat neck and shoulder shaping on the other side.

Back Panel:

Work as for front panel through Row 35 (35, 37, 37).

Next 5 rows: With wisteria, repeat row 2.

Neck and Shoulder Shaping

Next Row: Ch 2, dc in each of next 29 (34, 38, 42) sts, sc in next st, turn leaving remaining sts unworked.

Last 5 rows: Repeat rows 7-11 of Neck and Shoulder Shaping from the front panel.

Fasten off. Join yarn at opposite edge on last row of body, repeat neck and shoulder shaping on the other side.

Sleeve (Make two):

With wisteria and larger hook, ch 63 (67, 71, 75).

Row 1: Dc into the 2nd ch from the hook and each st across, turn. 62 (66, 70, 74) sts

Row 2: Ch 2, dc in each st across, turn.

Rows 3-6: Ch 2, dc2tog in next 2 sts, dc across to last 3 sts, dc2tog, dc in ch 2 of the previous row, turn. 54 (58, 62, 66) sts

Row 7: With black, repeat row 2.

Rows 8 & 9 : With wisteria, repeat row 3. 50 (54, 58, 62) sts

Rows 10-24: Repeat rows 7-9. 30 (34, 38, 42) sts

Row 25: Repeat row 7.

Rows 26 & 27: With empire, repeat row 2.

Row 28: With black, repeat row 2.

Rows 29-31 (29-31, 29-31, 29) : With empire, repeat row 2.

Fasten off.

Cuffs (Make two):

Row 1: Ch 6 with empire and smaller hook, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn.  5 sts

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in 3rd loop of each hdc across, turn.

Repeat for 28 (32, 36, 40) rows. Without breaking yarn, make 28 (32, 36, 40) sc along edge. Ch 2, dc into same st, 2 dc in each st across. Ch 2, turn, dc in same st. 2 dc in each st across. Fasten off, leaving an 18” tail.

Hem Band:

Row 1: Ch 6 with empire and smaller hook, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn.  5 sts

Row 2: Ch 1, hdc in 3rd loop of each hdc across, turn.

Repeat for 144 rows or until long enough to reach around entire bottom hem. Without breaking yarn sc in each row end across the top. Turn, ch 2, dc into same st. 2 dc in each st across for. Ch 2, turn, dc in same st. 2 dc in each st across. Fasten off.

Neckline:

Repeat same ribbing pattern as the hem band (Ch 6, 3rd loop only hdc) for 60 rows or until long enough to reach around neckline. Fasten off, do not make the ruffle portion.

Assembly:

Place the body panels together, whip stitching the shoulders together. Turn right side out, and loosely whip st sleeve in place. Once the sleeves are attached, turn inside out and whip st length of sleeve closed. Turn right side out, and lay the cuffs on the sleeve, with the ruffled portion facing the shoulder. Whip st in place, then whip st the edges of the ruffle together. Repeat for the band. Lay the neck piece around the neckline and pin in place to ensure it lays properly. Whip st in place.
