Borderline Tank

Borderline Tank Pattern by Two of Wands

It's fairly common for me to get an abundance of requests for a crochet version of a new knitting pattern, and vice versa, but I don't think I've consistently received so many passionate pleas for such over the course of several years for any design as much as my knit Streamline Tank. Well, the day has finally arrived folks! Say hello to the new *crochet* Borderline Tank! Scroll down for the free pattern. click here to purchase the PDF, or click here to grab the full yarn kit.

I think most of us (hopefully) understand that it's not just a matter of "translating" a knit pattern into crochet language to replicate a design. There are sooooo many things to consider and the crafts are totally different from one another. Aside from not being able to just toss the instructions into google translate, many things simply don't work in both crafts due to their different properties.

Borderline Tank Pattern by Two of Wands

Crochet produces a dense, rigid fabric while knitting produces a stretchy, lighter weight fabric. Crochet can be worked "freestyle" in any direction while knitting requires a more calculated and precise approach. Knit stitches are typically symmetric and sit atop each other while crochet stitches are very much not symmetric and most do not sit atop each other. For all of these reasons and more, I had pushed away the idea of a crochet version of the Streamline Tank since I released it in 2019.

Borderline Tank Pattern by Two of Wands

I don't know exactly what possessed me to finally give it a try, but I'll say that in the month it took me to create this piece I very much regretted that decision the entire time, LOL. In order to achieve the ribbed detailed found on the OG knit version, I had 2 options - work the tank top bottom up and use post stitches to create a raised "rib look" or work the tank sideways and use stitches worked into the back or front loops only to mimic the knit half fisherman's rib. The former would have been much MUCH easier to design, but I must admit that I usually hate the look of post stitches. They look so "crochet" and crafty/homemade to me that I try to avoid them for the most part. So began the process of figuring out how to design the tank sideways ...

Borderline Tank Pattern by Two of Wands

As I mentioned above, crochet stitches are not symmetric. This posed many a problem with this piece since I wanted the ribbing details to appear, you guessed it - symmetric - in multiple places. From the ribbed edges, straps, center front detailing, and increasing/decreasing to form the tops of the bust, there were countless things to consider to keep this piece looking polished and balanced. I went with a yarn over slip stitch through the back loop to create the faux half fisherman's rib which I knew would be a winner after using it for my Shelter Pullover and seeing first hand what a good replica it was.

Borderline Tank Pattern by Two of Wands

In crochet, when it comes to decreasing by working multiple together or increasing by working multiple stitches in the same place, the two look very different. I knew I would have to use a different technique to shape the bust. Enter, short rows. I was aware of this technique in crochet and had a vague awareness of how they worked, but it always takes a hands-on approach for me to really understand the mechanics. Turns out there are several ways to do them, and it took a LOT of trial and error for me to work out a technique that looked the same on both a wrong side and a right side row since I'd need to work them in pairs because of the sideways nature of the design. But the most complicated part was figuring out which rows/stitches to work into the back loop, front loop, or both loops of the row below to keep the "ribbing" lines symmetric and raised on both sides. Holy moly, it took a dozen or so attempts and nearly broke my brain.

Borderline Tank Pattern by Two of Wands

All that being said, I am SUPER pleased with the finished piece and I think it looks pretty dang similar to the original knit version if I do say so myself. And the best news is, even though it was crazy complicated to design, it's actually pretty easy to make! However, there is one main difference: crochet is much thicker than knit fabric, so the resulting tank is more dense and rigid than the knit Streamline Tank. I suggest less ease because with it being less drapey it needs to be more snug to lay properly on the body, so keep that in mind!

Notes: Tank top is worked flat side to side with short rows to shape the top and is seamed along one side seam. To increase or decrease the length, add or subtract 4 sts for every inch you’d like to length or shorten the tank, and adjust the number of single crochets in the body for each row to include these stitches. Pattern is written for eight sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL).
