It’s a huge milestone and at the same time a very magical moment when your baby takes their first steps. From that point on, the child will need something that will protect their feet, give them support, and not get in the way of their mobility. But before that crochet baby shoes and socks or even bare feet are a great way to go.

Therefore I have a very special pattern for you today. Grab some yarn, follow my free crochet pattern, and make your little sunshine a brand new pair of boho-inspired crochet baby sandals.

This week I am going to share with you how to make these beautiful boho crochet baby sandals. I will share with you my written pattern for the smallest size, a video tutorial for those who prefer visual instructions, and a beautifully designed PDF pattern with a ton of pictures that will help you understand the pattern when working offline.

The pattern is made with two of my favorite yarns Rico Creative Cotton in Aran weight and Paintbox Yarns Cotton in weight DK. The sandals match with the baby blanket from my previous post (HERE!) and together they can be a beautiful shower gift or something that you would make for your own child.

Just make sure all the buttons and tassels are nicely secured so they stay in place even when the baby is playing with them.

Instructions

Crochet Baby Sandal Pattern – Boho Baby

The instructions are written in a few simple steps:

  • sole
  • front strap
  • T-bar
  • back part
  • lines of slip stitches
  • tassels and
  • assembling.

Please, read the instructions carefully. Don’t skip any parts of the pattern and make sure you are not accidentally losing or adding additional stitches to the pattern. That might affect the final look of your design.

1. DOUBLE SOLE

Take some Aran weight yarn in dark beige color and 3.5 mm crochet hook and create a foundation chain of 10.

Round 1: Start in the 2nd chain from the hook. Make 2 hdc into the same chain. Hdc 7. Make 6 hdc into the last chain from the hook, now continue on the opposite side of foundation chain. Hdc 7. Make 2 hdc into the last one. Join the round with a ss. = 24 sts.

Round 2: Ch 1. Start in the same stitch. Work 2 hdc into next 2. Hdc 7 sts. Make 2 hdc into next 6 sts. Hdc into next 7 sts. Now make 2 hdc into last 2 sts. Join the round with a ss. = 34 sts.

Round 3: Ch 1. Start in the same st. Repeat {2 hdc into the same st, 1 hdc into the next one} 2 times. Hdc into next 7 sts. Repeat {2 hdc into the same st, 1 hdc into the next one} 6 times. Hdc into next 7 sts. Repeat {2 hdc into the same st, 1 hdc into the next one} 2 times. Join the round with a ss. Cut the yarn, fasten off and pull the yarn tail through the last stitch to the wrong side of the sole. = 44 sts.

Place the soles wrong sides together.

Round 4: Take a small amount of yarn in an off-white color and join both soles together working slip stitches all the way around the sole.

Make sure you use all 4 loops; 2 loops from the sole on the top and 2 loops from the sole at the bottom.

Stop one stitch before the end (photo 9). Cut the yarn and pull the yarn tail through the stitch.

Join the first and last st of this round with an invisible join – slip stitch.

With this round, you will get 1 additional st!

The following steps are showing you how to create a crochet sole, how to join two soles together and how the finished double layer sole should look like.

Mark the following stitches:

Turn the sole with the backside of slip stitches up (one loop only). Take 6 stitch markers and attach those stitch markers into next sts:

  •  8th stitch on the left and right from the center st of the heel (mark 17 sts in total) – for the back upper part,
  •  skip 3 sts on both sides and attach the marker into 4th,
  •  skip 2 sts on both sides and attach the marker into the 3rd – for the front strap.

2. FRONT STRAP

The front upper part is made of two pieces, together shaping one panel in the shape of a letter T. Take some Aran weight yarn in the off-white color. Make a foundation chain of 15 chains. Start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Work in rows. Turn after each row.

Row 1 – 2: Work 1 hdc into each of next 14 sts. Ch 1. Turn. = 14 sts.

Row 3: Work 1 sc into each of next 14 sts. = 14 sts.

Cut the yarn fasten off, but leave a long tail for sewing. Take a small amount of yarn in a light beige color, thread a needle, and attach the strap to 2 and 2 sts – marked on each side of the sole with two stitch markers. Make sure you are sewing on the inner side of the sandal.

3. T-BAR

Take some Aran weight yarn in the off-white color and ch 4. Start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Work in rows. Turn after each row.

Row 1 – 11: Sc 3. Ch 1. Turn. = 3 sts.

Row 12: Sc 3. = 3 sts.

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Take 2 stitch markers and mark 4 sts right in the center of the front strap.

Thread a needle with the yarn tail, fold the strap in half and sew T-bar to the center of the front strap going through both layers of the T-bar.

Make sure you are sewing on the inner side of the sandal.

4. Back Part

Use Aran weight yarn in the shade off-white.

Join the yarn in the stitch on the left side – you facing the toes; in the 8th stitch from the center of the sole.

Work in rows.

After each row ch 1 and turn the row. Follow the separate instructions for right and left sandal.

Left Sandal

Row 1: Ch 1 and start in the same. Work 1 hdc into each of the next 17 sts. Ch 1. Turn. = 17 sts.

Row 2 – 3: Work 1 hdc in each of next 17. Ch 1. Turn. = 17 sts.

Row 4: Work 1 hdc into each of the next 17. Ch 13 to make a base for the strap and ch additional 5 for the buttonhole, so 18 chains in total. = 17 sts.

Row 5: Skip the first 5 chains and start on the 6th. Work 1 hdc into each of the next 13 to make an ankle strap. Work 1 hdc into each of the next 17 to finish the row. = 30 sts.

Cut the yarn, fasten off and weave in the ends.

Right Sandal

Row 1: Ch 1 and start in the same. Work 1 hdc into each of next 17 sts. Ch 1. Turn. = 17 sts.

Row 2 – 4: Work 1 hdc in each of next 17. Ch 1. Turn. = 17 sts.

Row 5: Work 1 hdc into each of the next 17 sts. Ch 13 to make the base for the ankle strap and ch additional 5 for the buttonhole, so 18 chains in total. Skip the first 5 chains and start on the 6th. Work 1 hdc into each of the next 13 to make a strap. = 30 sts.

Attach the strap to row 4 with a slip stitch.

Cut the yarn, fasten off and weave in the ends.

5. LINES OF SLIP STITCHES

Now we are going to create 3 simple lines made of slip stitches on the back of the heel part of each sandal. This part will be made with DK weight yarn and I will use a different color for each row.

Row 1: This row is made between the sole and row 1. Use blue yarn. Work 1 ss into each of the next 17 sts. Cut the yarn and fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Row 2: This row is made between rows 2 and 3. Use yellow yarn. Work 1 ss in each of the next 17 sts. Cut the yarn and fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Row 3: This row is made between rows 4 and 5. Use orange yarn. Work 1 ss in each of the next 17 sts. Cut the yarn and fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Create three lines of slip stitches. You can use just one color or use more as I did here.

6. TASSELS

Make three tassels for each sandal; one in blue, one in yellow, and one orange. That is 6 tassels in total.

1. Cut a piece of cardboard 2 cm (0.75”) wide or use your thumb. Wrap the yarn around the cardboard or your thumb 8 – 10 times.

2. Cut the yarn 5 cm (2”) long.

3. Thread the tapestry needle (or use your fingers or a crochet hook) with that yarn and tie top of the tassel.

4. Take the scissors and cut the yarn at the bottom of the tassel.

5. Use a short strand of yarn, around 10 cm (4β€œ) long. Wrap the strand around the teasel, about 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) from the top.

6. Make a nice and rm knot.

7. Take a yarn needle, thread the yarn tails and pull both ends through the center of the tassel and out at the bottom and mix them between the rest of the yarn ends.

8. Make one or two additional knots on the top of the tassel.

Tassels are easy to make and super fun to use. You can attach them to any DIY crochet project and they will look cute.

7. ASSEMBLING

Sew the button onto each shoe, to fasten the ankle strap.

Attach three and three tassels to each sandal, right to the first row of the T-bar. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Use your fingers to grab the ankle strap and pull in through the loop on the T-bar. Attach the ankle strap to the button.

Please make sure all the pieces are nicely secured to the sandals to prevent any accidents.

And your adorable baby sandals are complete.

Thank you so much for the lovely pattern. Do you have an idea how to make them less slippery?

I usually use Rico Sock Stop for mine. It’s made from latex. You just need a few drops here and there and live it until it’s completely dry. It’s great for crochet baby shoes, especially for sizes when babies start to crawl or walk and socks for all sizes and shapes. πŸ˜€

You can add one additional row of hdc sts around the sole. Don’t forget to increase on front and back to make the shape of the sole nice and round. 😊
You can use this pattern for the round 4: Ch 1. Start in the same st. Repeat {2 hdc into the same st, 1 hdc into the next two} 2 times. Hdc into next 7 sts. Repeat {2 hdc into the same st, 1 hdc into the next two} 6 times. Hdc into next 7 sts. Repeat {2 hdc into the same st, 1 hdc into the next two} 2 times. Join the round with a ss.
Happy crocheting! 😊

I want to purchase some of your patterns but your Ravelry shop only accepts Paypal and I choose not to use Paypal. I would rather use my VISA card. Please update your page so I can buy some of your patterns. πŸ™‚

Hi Renee! I don’t think Ravelry offers any other payment methods. If I am not mistaken, everything goes through PayPal. If that is a dealbreaker for you, try Etsy. 😊
