Gather your supplies

  • 1 Skein Red Heart Soft, Watercolors (approx. 200 yards), Color B
  • Approx 75 yds, Red Heart Soft, White, Color A
  • Size 5.5 mm crochet hook (for clutch)
  • Size 6.5 mm crochet hook (for handle accent)
  • Darning needle
  • Scissors

Gauge and Sizing

7 sts x 7 rows = 4″ in bobble stitch

Your finished clutch will measure approximately 11″ wide by 7.5″ tall. Please note that your sizing may vary if your gauge does not match mine.

Abbreviations

  • Ch – Chain
  • Bo – Bobble Stitch **see stitch description
  • Sc – Single Crochet

Pattern Notes

This pattern begins by crocheting a large rectangle for the body of the clutch which is then folded in half and stitched up the sides. The handle is added in single crochet rounds to finish it off.

How to Crochet the Bobble Stitch

Stitch Description:

Bobble Stitch (Bo): YO, Insert hook into the designated stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 (2 loops on hook).  YO, Insert hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 (3 loops on hook). YO, Insert hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 (4 loops on hook). YO, Insert hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 (5 loops on hook). YO, Insert hook into the same stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 (6 loops on hook). YO and pull through all 6 loops on your hook.

Color Key:

Purse

Color A

Row 1: Ch 34. Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc of bo stitch) and finish the bobble in the first stitch. *Sc in next stitch, Bo stitch in the next stitch. Repeat from * until you have reached the end of the row. (17 bobble sts)

Row 3: Ch 1 and sc in every stitch.

Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as first dc of bo stitch) and finish the bobble in the first stitch. *Sc in next stitch, Bo stitch in the next stitch. Repeat from * until you have reached the end of the row. (17 bobble sts)

Row 5: Ch 1 and sc in every stitch. Bind off color A.

Color B

Row 6: With wrong side facing you, bind on Color BCh 3 (counts as first dc of bo stitch) and finish the bobble in the first stitch. *Sc in next stitch, Bo stitch in the next stitch. Repeat from * until you have reached the end of the row. (17 bobble sts)

Row 7: Ch 1 and sc in every stitch.

Rows 8-37: Repeat rows 6 and 7. Even number rows will be bobble stitch rows and odd number rows will be single crochet rows. At end of row 37, bind off color B.

Color A

Row 38: With wrong side facing you, bind on Color ACh 3 (counts as first dc of bo stitch) and finish the bobble in the first stitch. *Sc in next stitch, Bo stitch in the next stitch. Repeat from * until you have reached the end of the row. (17 bobble sts)

Row 39: Ch 1 and sc in every stitch.

Row 40: With wrong side facing you, bind on Color ACh 3 (counts as first dc of bo stitch) and finish the bobble in the first stitch. *Sc in next stitch, Bo stitch in the next stitch. Repeat from * until you have reached the end of the row. (17 bobble sts)

Row 41: Ch 1 and sc in every stitch. Bind off and weave in your ends

Fold your rectangle in half, right sides together and whip stitch the left and right ends together. Turn your clutch right side out.

Handle

Bobble stitch Clutch

Round 1: Bind on Color A at back of purse, in the first stitch next to the seam. Ch 1 and Sc in every stitch. Mark your first Sc with a stitch marker and carry it each round. When you have reached the other seam, simply jump to the other size and Sc in the first stitch. Do not join, continue to work in spiral. (68 sts)

Rounds 2-3: Make 1 Sc in every stitch.

Round 4: Sc in the first 11 sts after your stitch marker. Ch 12 and skip 12 stitches. Sc in the next 22 sts. Ch 12 and skip 12 sts. Sc in the last 11 sts.

Round 5: Sc in every stitch. When you reach the ch 12 gap spaces, make 12 Sc sts around each chain.

Round 6: Sc in every stitch. Bind off and weave in your ends.

Handle Accent

Using your size 6.5 mm hook, bind on color B around the handle. Make 12 Sc around the handle. Note that we are not working into stitches for the handle. Please see image above for guidance. Bind off and weave in your ends. Repeat for other handle.
