Video tutorial.

A sun hat pattern step.

Crown (work in spriral do not join round)

You will work from top to bottom,

Make magic ring or adjustable ring and 8sc in ring (8 sts)

Round1. 2sc in each st around (16 sts)

Round2. *Sc in next st, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * around (24 sts)

Round3. *Sc in next 2 st, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * around (32sts)

Round4. *Sc in next 3 st, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * around (40 sts)

Round5. *Sc in next 4 st, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * around (48 sts) .

Round6. *Sc in next 5 st, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * around (56 sts) .

Round7. *Sc in next 6 st, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * around (64 sts) .

After  we finished the crown round 7 we will measure up the circle it around 5.0 inch.

Now we will  make the hat body by continue from round7 and to add the body of the hat by use  solid shell stitch.

Start to make solid shell stitch.

At the end of round7 you will chain 1 then continue to solid shell round.

Round1. sc, * skip2 st then make 5dc in the next st, skip2 st make sc in next st* repeat this * to * and around at the end have 2 stitch remain skip those 2 st and slip stitch in sc in the previous round.

Round2. ch3 (this chain 3 count as 1dc) then make 4 more of dc in  the same sc that we just slip stitch, then skip 2 st,  *make sc in next st, sk2 st then make 5dc in next st* repeat this * to this * and around.

then   we will finish round2 of solid shell stitch by join the round by make  slip stitch in each of the first 3 stitch of the previous round until we are on the middle position of the first shell then ch1 and make sc in the same st of the chain 1 that we just make.

And we will repeat round 1 and 2 or the solid shell stitch until we reach   7.0 inch deep. or try it on  to see if it long enough to cover you head.

Making the brim.

Base of the brim.  Front loop only *Sc in next st, 2sc in next st*, repeat from * around ( no stitch count).

Round1. Both loop sc, * skip2 st then make 5dc in the next st, skip2 st make sc in next st* repeat this * to * and around at the end have 2 stitch remain skip those 2 st and slip stitch in sc in the previous round.

Round2. both loop ch3 (this chain 3 count as 1dc) then make 4 more of dc in  the same sc that we just slip stitch, then skip 2 st,  *make sc in next st, sk2 st then make 5dc in next st* repeat this * to this * and around.

then   we will finish round2 of solid shell stitch by join the round by make  slip stitch in each of the first 3 stitch of the previous round until we are on the middle position of the first shell then ch1 and make sc in the same st of the chain 1 that we just make.

Then we will repeat  from base of the brim to round 1 and 2,  one more set until we reach   3.0 inch deep of the brim and finish off.

All done!

 happy crochetitng.

Just a note on adjusting for larger heads... I made this and realized after several rows into the shell stitch that it is too small for my head despite following the gauge. I tried transitioning at that point in the shells stitch to larger hooks but even still at the end it was too small for my apparently gargantuan head. So while working the Crown, it's easy enough to adjust by making the measure across 6-7" rather than noted 5". Otherwise, it's a lovely pattern and works up quickly and easily. Thank you for sharing!
