Crochet basket with Christmas trees

Here is a free crochet pattern for a tapestry crochet basket with Christmas trees. It is not complicated to make and it won’t take much time. You could fill this basket with some Christmas treats and give it as a present to your loved ones! It would also look great as a decoration on your Christmas table.

I have many more free patterns for Christmas. You can take a look at snowflakes here and here, a cute cross stitch Christmas tree, a Christmas garland, two hearts here and here, a potholder with Christmas ornaments, a tapestry crochet drawstring bag with a snowflake and with a Christmas tree. Also, you will find 24 more tapestry crochet projects for Christmas in my pattern collection Christmas Tales. It is also available as a book in PDF format in the Nordic Hook shop.

If you haven’t tried tapestry crochet before, you can take a look at my tutorial here.

Good luck!

Materials

  • Yarn: any thin yarn will work. I used Tencel 100% lyocell, 50 g = 141 m, colors: green (318288) and white (318290).
  • Hook: as suggested on your yarn label. I used hook size 2.0 mm.

Abbreviations (US terms)

Notes

The diameter of my basket is 10.0 cm and the height is 5.0 cm (10.0 cm when not folded in).

For this pattern you should be familiar with the tapestry crochet (you can find the tutorial here). Photo instructions below show the main steps how to make this item. This pattern uses a modified single crochet: make a single crochet back loop only, just instead of yarning over for the last step, yarn under (see the tutorial here).

You will work in continuous rounds, which means that in the end of a round you don’t join with a slip stitch, but instead continue making modified single crochets in the top of the first stitch of the round. Remember to use a marker showing the beginning of each round. Follow the color chart showing how you should change colors.

Color chart

Color chart: Crochet basket with Christmas trees by Nordic Hook

How to read the chart

Each square represents a stitch and its color. The chart represents a half of the pattern: the first 48 stitches (48 columns in the chart) in a round. You should repeat stitches 1-48 two times (to have 96 stitches in one round). Rows represent rounds (there are 35 rounds, however, the first 12 rounds are not shown in the color chart: they are all green and they are the round base of the basket). For each round you have to read the row in the chart from right to left.

You can find a more detailed tutorial explaining how to read a color chart and when and how to change yarn color here.

Photo instructions for the crochet basket with Christmas trees

Round 1

1. Start by making a magic ring. Then make 8 single crochets in the magic ring.

2. Tighten the ring by pulling the end of the yarn.

Round 2

3. Don’t make a slip stitch. Make a modified single crochet in the top of your first stitch of round 1: insert your hook in the top of the first stitch of round 1 grabbing just the back loop, yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

4. In round 2 you have to introduce white yarn. So, put the white yarn behind your hook and in front of the green yarn like it is shown in the picture.

5. Then yarn under the green yarn.

6. Pull the yarn through. You have just made a modified single crochet.

7. To make a modified single crochet increase you have to make the second modified single crochet in the same stitch.

8. Then make another modified single crochet increase in the next stitch.

9. Work in the same way until the end of the round.

Round 12

10. Keep following the written pattern until the end of round 12. The base of the basket is completed.

Round 13

11. The first stitch in round 14 is white. So, don’t complete the last stitch in round 13, stop when you have two loops on your hook, because you have to change yarn color.

12. Then move the white yarn up.

13. Yarn under the white yarn.

14. Pull the yarn through. Now your white yarn is ready to use.

Round 14

15. In round 14 continue to work with the white yarn.

Round 15

16. The sixth stitch in round 15 is green. So, make four full modified single crochets with the white yarn, start making the fifth one, but stop when you have two loops on your hook.

17. Then put the green yarn up and complete the stitch with it. The green yarn is ready to use.

18. Start making the sixth stitch with green yarn, but don’t complete it, because the next stitch is white and you should change yarn color again.

19. So, complete the sixth stitch with white yarn.

20. For the rest of the pattern follow the color chart.

Round 35

21. When you reach the end of round 35, you have to even out the edge by making four slip stitches in the back loop only. Now you can put your white yarn aside.

22. So, insert your hook in the next stitch grabbing just the back loop.

23. Yarn over and pull the yarn through. Now you have two loops on your hook.

24. Pull the first loop through the second one. You have just made a slip stitch in the back loop only.

25. Make three more slip stitches in the back loop only in the next three stitches. Then fasten off.

26. This is how the basket looks like when the sides are not folded in.

Finished crochet basket with Christmas trees

27. Fold in the sides of the basket (the folding line is on round 24). Done!
