Amir the Elephant is part of the 2019 CAL Central Softie CAL. He’s somewhere between a softie and a pillow. Amir loves hugs and cuddles. He’s super soft and sports a beautiful blanket designed and made by my daughter, Vada. Vada also came up with the idea to make an elephant for the Softie CAL. Amir would make a great gift! I have included details on making the blanket with a Cricut, along with how to make a fabric inner lining if you are concerned about stuffing poking through.

Products used in this design were provided by Fairfeild International, Red Heart Yarns, and Laurel Hill. All opinions are my own.

Amir was named after an awesome technician who was in my house when I was trying to figure out this pattern. I would crochet a while, hold it up and say “That doesn’t look right!” Amir would pause from his work, look at it, give me a suggestion, and then keep going. Eventually my crochet looked like an elephant, thanks to the extra eyes I had that day!

About the Softie CAL

Every Monday from April 1 through June 3, 2019, we’ll share a free crochet pattern for a softie! You can make fun softie projects to keep, for gifts, or to donate to charity while chatting with other crocheters in our groups and sharing your projects to win giveaway prizes! Cut yarn, place on one body right side up and sew ear down along Row 1 and first and last st of Border only.

Border of Second Ear:
Rnd 1 (Right Side): Join Color B to side of turning ch of first Row (opposite of starting tail), ch 1, 11 sc up side of ear, 2 sc in first st of top, sc in each of next 10 sts of top, 2 sc in last st of top, 9 sc down side of ear. – {34 sts}
Cut yarn, place on one body right side up and sew ear down along Row 1 and first and last st of Border only.

Optional Fabric Lining:

Lay one body on a piece of fabric lining and trace around body leaving 3/4″ from the body.
Cut 2 of these pieces and sew them right sides together with a 1/2″ seam leaving a 4″ opening in the top. (this will end up a bit bigger then the crocheted body which is good as it will make the finished product firm).
Turn right side out and stuff firmly.
Stitch opening shut.
Join as below, omitting stuffing instructions below and instead placing stuffed lining in body after joining bottom half of trunk. Continue joining around lining.

Joining

Line up bodies wrong sides together, and head to the right side. Sc both sides together and stuff in the following manner:
Join Color B to both marked stitches and leave a starting yarn tail of 18″.
Sc down the side to the bottom of the leg. (1 sc around side of each row)
2 Sc in corner, sc across bottom of foot, 2 sc in corner.
Sc up side of leg, sc2tog around inside corner, sc along bottom of belly, sc2tog around inside corner, sc down side of leg.
2 Sc in corner, sc across bottom of foot, 2 sc in corner.
Sc up side of leg sc2tog twice at curve from body to head, sc around bottom of trunk.
2 Sc at trunk corner, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog, sc in each of next 2 sts (there should only be 1 st left in top of trunk), sc2tog around inside corner, sc along edge of head to were the ears are joined, pause (do not end or cut).
Stuff legs and trunk.
Sc across top stopping 4″ before the start of the border.
Stuff completely.
Finish sc-ing around. Finish off leaving an 18″ yarn tail.

Tail

Cut 5 strands of Color B, each 36″ long.
Pull strands half way through point where border starts and stops.
Including the yarn tails already there, there will not be 12 strands of yarn, each 18″ long.
Holding in bunches of 4, braid yarn together for 6″.
Tie a knot at end of braid and cut ends unevenly from 2-4″ long.

Amir the Elephant free crochet pattern by Jessie At Home - blanket sketch by VadaPin
This is Vada’s sketch for the blanket. I think we did a good job transferring it to a Cricut project!
Blanket and Eyes

Cut blanket and eyes from felt.
A Cricut project for these can be found HERE. If you have an earlier model Cricut that does not cut felt, you can cut the pieces from card stock and use them as patterns. Also, you can draw out your own design on paper to make a unique pattern. The blanket is 5 x 12″.
Glue the layers of the eyes and blanket together.
Embroider as desired.
Add tassels to the blanket if desired. HERE is a tutorial.
Sew eyes onto head with embroidery floss or sewing thread.
Sew blanket onto body at the center across the border round of the body. Tack down again as desired, or make 2 cords and run each from one corner of the blanket, under the body, and to opposite corner on the other half of the blanket.

Cuddle or give and enjoy!

  1. I finished Row 8. 29 stitches. Row nine tells me to work in Chains.
I have no chains only stitches.
if I follow the instructions I certainly do not end up almost doubling my Stitch count.
can you clarify this for me please… thank you so much… I love the pattern!
