Sewn : Pink Pleated Chiffon Skirt

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Today I realized something. Almost all, if not all my pictures are taken of the right side of my body. You never see my short arm. I've thought I did that kind of accidentally (I like the right side of my face better, ha) but I'm beginning to wonder if I do it more subconsciously than I realize.. So,

Nothing to hide. But I guess at the same time I know it's definitely weird looking at someone without a hand (it's the same for me when I see someone without a leg) and you know, it's ok to admit that too. It is different and takes some getting used to. But I guess I'm just realizing that at the end of the day, this is me! And really there's no point in not being ok with me.
And really as long as I can still carry in more groceries at one time than my mom, I'm happy. haha
Top: ASOS Skirt: Handmade, Shoes: Shoemint
Alright to the skirt,
This skirt I've already posted, but I desperately needed some updated pictures so there you go. I made this so long ago that I honestly don't remember where I got the fabric but I did find some similar fabric that I'll link to below.

Oh and I know these pictures look like I went way too vibrancy-happy on the colors ps, I think it's because I actually have a tan for once. ha and the field looks really green for some reason but that's really how it was.

Pattern: self-drafted
(but here are some instructions
showing you how to make a similar one.)

Happy Tuesday! Any fun plans for the week ahead?
I'm playing hooky from school today and going to a One Direction concert. haha I'm way too pumped about it. Any One Direction fans in the house?

  1. You are so cute! And I appreciate how comfortable you are in your own skin- that's really pretty uncommon for someone your age. Of course, it probably helps that you make such amazing clothes- how could you not feel great in this adorable skirt?!

PS- I totally have a favorite side of my face, too (left side... my bangs always look better on that side, and I have acne scarring on the right side).

    1. Thanks so much Sonja! That's exactly how I am with the left side of my face too. In fact sometimes I even sit on the left side of the classroom so that side doesn't show. hahaha that's probably embarrassing to admit but whatever. Thanks again Sonja, you're comment was really nice.

  2. Lovely as usual! Quick question: how did you hem the skirt? I have some pleated chiffon I want to make a skirt out of, but can't figure out how to finish it....

    1. I just serged it! Just using pink thread and a narrow stitch. It worked really well, I was worried it would mess up the pleats but I've had no issues at all. Good luck with your skirt! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions

  5. You're gorgeous. And, I love this outfit. Was the pleated chiffon fussy to work with?

    1. Thanks so much Michelle! No honestly I was happily surprised, I was worried the pleating wouldn't last very long but I've had this skirt for coming on 3 years now (and worn it TONS) and the pleats are still just as good as new! It's obviously not as easy to sew with as cotton is but it's definitely not too bad. Not slippery so that's good!

    1. Ahh Sallie! It always means so much getting comments from you. Thanks by the way, that was really nice of you to say. I do love how floaty the fabric is, it's very flattering because it isn't super body conscious. :) Thanks again girl!

  9. The skirt turned out beautiful. So sweet and flow-y! It is wonderful that you are comfortable with yourself and have acceptance for who you are. You seem to have cracked the code at such a young age. You are a gorgeous and very talented lady from all sides!

By the way, I also have a favorite side of my face. It's the left side because my left eyebrow is prettier than my right one, ha!

  10. Beautiful skirt! I've had something in mind like this but a midi version and wondering whether it will be a pain to iron later. Lovely pics as always. x

    2. Ok so I've TOTALLY been thinking the same. Except I already have a midi version that I bought so I'm having trouble justifying it. haha (I don't love the fit which is why I'm tempted to make a new one.) Point is I'm totally loving the way you think! As for ironing, I was worried about the same thing but I've honestly not had to iron this skirt once and I've had it for almost 3 years. I'm sure it depends a lot on the fabric you use but just my two cents on my experience. Definitely post it if you do end up making it though because I'd love to see it!

    2. Your'e welcome sweetheart.
I cant say Im a OD fan...Im more into old rock music like the Rolling Stones but nonetheless, I do love the feeling of being at a concert. There is very little that comes close to 50,000 people all singing to a favourite tune :-)
Oh & Im so glad you've found my blog too xx

  13. Good for you Haylee! But I have to just say, I don't think most people notice other peoples' flaws very much because we're all so concerned with our own! I am more concerned about a big zit on my own forehead than I am about 30 on someone else's, and I always think everyone is staring at me in a workout class even though one quick glance in the mirror tells me it's not the case!
I hope to get to a point where I can just create things without patterns someday! Did you do anything special to get to that point, or does it just come with time?

    1. Ya that's a really good point, I'm definitely the same way. I get hesitant about my hand sometimes because I feel like that's such an "in your face" thing that people really can't ignore so it makes me uneasy about it sometimes (not uneasy- that's the wrong word. I mean like that sometimes I shy away from being super showy about it or anything because I never know how people will respond to it, some are turned off and others don't care) but also that brings up an important point that it's probably important to just not care what people think in the first place. :) Much easier said than done of course, ESPECIALLY in workout class. haha

Ya honestly it's kind of just come with time, plus if you ever get stuck you can find great (free) tutorials online to help. Elastic waistband skirts are pretty easy though because pretty much a square with an elastic band attached to it. ha so I wouldn't say I'm super confident either! Usually I definitely go off instructions or pattern drafting books.
I'm here if you ever have any questions too ps!
